British and French forces drive German lines back along a 13 mile front between the Avre and Oise rivers. Germans admit severe losses as troops yield ground, with advances reaching up to about 2 1/2 miles in several sectors.
British forces captured Bapaume on the Franco Belgian front after stiff fighting and entered Le Transloy and Achiet le Petit. The town burned as Germans retreated and the British pushed beyond the city limits. Berlin confirmed continued retirement of German troops between Sailly and St Pierre Vaast wood and Beauvraignes and Lassigny.
Paris reports French troops advanced last night north of the Avre and between the Avre and Oise, pushing a line about 13 miles long with depths up to two and a half miles. The war office confirms progress along this front across several positions.

Swanton March 17 Dr E M Funk died this morning after injuries from the fulminated dry house explosion at the International Explosives Co He leaves a wife and son Claude from a former marriage He was born August 21 1870 in Bonscobel Wisconsin later lived in Virginia and New England He came to Swanton in 1914 as work manager for Robin Hood Ammunition Co He helped form the International Explosives Co and served as general manager He was active in trap shooting a Mason and a Knight Templar The body will be taken to his wife's home in Manchester NS for burial Monday
Charles Guyette an elderly man died suddenly at his son Fred Guyette's home in Center. State's Attorney ordered disinterment and autopsy by Dr. B. H. Stone and Whitney. Death blamed on apoplexy on city burial records, but investigators found odd circumstances and a stomach sample sent to the state lab.
