Washington March 12 formal notice to all foreign missions says American merchant ships in the German submarine zone must carry an armed guard for protection. In Boston on Hyde Park avenue Patrolman Frank H Shepherd shot suspect Racco Santos after arresting him for disturbance. Four shots were fired at close range with Shepherd wounded in abdomen and breast. Santos died at the police station five minutes later. he was 42 and a laborer.
Boston reports Miss Sophia dAmour of Lowell lost 5880 dollars on a New York bound trip. She told police a taxi purse opening led to the loss while en route from a hotel to the railroad station. A reward was offered for return.
The Ministers' Monday club in Barre held a long meeting with Rev L C Carson and Rev Verne Smith presenting papers. Fifteen clergy from Barre and nearby towns attended as President Rev Kilgur Crossland chaired and discussion extended past noon. Afterward the group dined at Caf Shepard.

Virginia Laffargo a printer of 89 Smith street suffered a severe arm fracture deep head bruises and leg abrasion after a belt slipped and he was pulled into a monotype machine shaft in the Montpelier Argus office Saturday afternoon. He remained at Heaton hospital Montpelier with condition described as precarious as doctors Dr. F E Steele treated his injuries and workers freed him from the tangled gear. Laffarge formerly worked in Barre North Main street and at Modern Printing before joining The Argus in the capital city.
Waterbury reports a second infantile paralysis case, that of 11-year-old Mark Dillon, son of Rep. John Dillon and Mrs. Dillon. The boy, paralyzed waist down, attended high school Thursday. Case confirmed by state lab, two week school closure ordered. first case in city is a 20-year-old? daughter of the Finnegan family. Rumors of more cases denied. state says only two cases known in the state.
Agostino Bottiggi longtime Barre Italian colony resident and early settler of the Barre granite district died at his home 25 Foss Street Sunday at 4 am. He had been in declining health for three months and was married to Minnie Currie. he had relatives in Tarra and Cleveland. Born in Bree, he came to America, worked at Canton Brot, and for over 25 years in Barre he labored in granite and was a member of the granite cutters union. Funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from his home, with interment in the family lot at Hope Cemetery.
