Early today a lodging house sheltering 175 men on Clark Street was attacked by flames. Six men are confirmed dead with many others trapped on upper floors and feared dead as fire crews gain access. Witnesses say the building residents fled as smoke and flames spread, with several jumping from windows to escape.
London reports that Amundsen is widely acknowledged as the first to reach the South Pole. Some await Captain Scott’s return for a full Antarctic narrative, while Royal observers stay cautious before sending congratulations.
Jon and party left Thursday for New York with Misa Mills to stay about two months in Leigh North Carolina. A bishop Cheshire will accompany and likely join in May. The bishop had been ill about a week or ten days in town and a milder climate is believed to help.
Vorp wi Prince, March 9 General Mules Cojcon, a former tyrant of Mitt, was condemned to death today for having led the fusillade of March 1048. Ten people died, among them Colveu's own brothers, as the plot sought to terrorize white people with threats to carve out hearts.
A hearing before H C Reyer in St Albans concerns a $1200 claim for services by Pilgrim Shoe and Rubber Co of Boston. Attorneys Cowles Mowe son Stearns Edmund Mower for the plaintiff and Stallister Jackson Barre with Warner Warner & Stackpole Boston for the defendant. Witnesses included Charles Young and Herman Ackerman, with adjournment granted for further evidence.
New York March 1 The stock exchange firm of Connor & Coanneanort was suspended today on the exchange. Counsel said the firm has been in process of liquidation for a year and the illness of Connor, senior member, is noted. A liabilities estimate around 5 J is mentioned with insufficient assets.
At the Vermont schools conference and Vermont University event, speakers urged a unified statewide school system from kindergarten to university. James A. James of Northwestern urged better history resources and clean lines in athletics. President Benton pressed equal freshman curricula and warned against class-based school distinctions.
A Chicago man, Prof James H.W. Tufte of the University of Chicago, is reported as selected for the presidency at Amherst College. President George A. Harris would confirm the appointment today, with official action expected by commencement in June.
In Manchester New Hampshire the nine members of the strike at the W L MeRt main company's shoe factories pleaded not guilty in police court to picketing law violations. They waived examination and were held in 2000 each for appearance at the May term of the superior court. Two men George Howin and Frederick I Wolene were ordered to furnish 1000 bonds each to keep the peace.
The Talk of the Town notes many visitors and residents in White River Junction, including Fara White in F. HL Move Jers clothing store, Willan Santurn of Bradford, Oudworth of Keene, and others arriving for business or to visit. Local church and social notices mention Rev G George J Holt at the Baptist church and a Christian endeavor meeting.
Newport March 3 The Coast Artillery private Edward K Jones of the 120th company was killed this morning by Patrolman Gentile during efforts to disperse a noisy artillery crowd at Fort Adams. Gentile says the revolver discharged accidentally in self defense. Autopsy completed by Medical Examiner Stewart as police investigate.
Levi W. Davis died at his Waterbury home on High Street just after midnight following heart disease and related ailments. Born October 28, 1845 in Waterbury Virginia, he spent years in Waterbury and earlier worked at the state hospital for the insane. He married Adele Smith forty years ago and leaves five children, several relatives, and siblings in Ontario. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist church, Rev. Newell officiating.
A. W. Allen moves his business into the Averill mill on South Main Street to serve Washington and nearby counties. The new show room features a wide range of plows and farming implements from well known makers, plus a repair shop and storage space, with offices added at the mill’s south end.
President Taft arrived in Chicago this morning to a crowd of several hundred. He was escorted downtown for breakfast and to discuss the day’s planned events. Taft will remain in the city until tomorrow night as he prepares for an important trip abroad.
In Williamstown Vermont a woman, Priscilla R. Sheldon, pleaded guilty to pension fraud, admitting she received more from the government than allowed and aided another to obtain a pension. She was arrested in Mexico and brought back for trial.
Two prisoners from Sing Bly rammed a barrier on a river shore and fled, then surfaced in the Hideon river. They were located at nine local time and captured after a bystander fired a warning shot, one man sustaining a minor injury while the other fled.
Under Clan Gordon patronage No. 12080 the Cockburn Caledonian Concert Company offered a varied Scots program at Barre Opera House. Notable artists included John Macintyre with bagpipes, Bessie Spear, Mrs. Nottie Sawyer Roberts, and Mr. Cockburn delivering strong baritone and bagpipe numbers. The audience praised Crowning pieces like Cockburns Huntingtower and McGregor's Gatherers, with a finale and closing bagpipes. A complimentary reception followed, hosted with ladies’ support in the Knights of Pythias hall.
Herbert E. Reid, longtime Northfield businessman and former Deeam Jonas Theatre soloist, died Thursday at his late home after several months illness. He was age and left a daughter George James of Hardwick and brothers. He was a member of Thewitt Clinton lodge, New 5, FP, AL Kadwanl Dypann of Burlington and had spent recent years with Barre friends.
Lowell Massachusetts March 9 Twenty thousand cotton mill operatives will receive wage advances next month though the exact amount is undisclosed. The revision follows the Lawrence plan and is seen as curbing spread of unrest after wage reductions under the Dur law. Merrimac Woolen Mills employees were notified of raises to take effect next Monday. A Boston conference between strikers and American Woolen Co officials was scheduled today to discuss settlement prospects.
Committees from the Berre Retail Merchants' association and the clerks' association met briefly in their rooms to discuss proposed bills for signing when the clerks' agreement expires. Neither group has authority to bind the talks, and both sides expect to refer the bills back for consideration. Leaders express confidence in harmony and a ratified agreement before the current schedule ends.
Laymen of the Universalist church hosted a late evening banquet in the vestry to acquaint parishioners with Rev. J. M. Reardon, who arrives from Springfield to take the rural pastorate in Barre on April 1. Mrs. Reardon attended, about ten couples enjoyed service by the women, and Mr. Reardon spoke on the duties of laymen. The Laymen's League leaders T. Southgate Arthur S Martin and William H. Duthie organized the event to help the pastor and his wife feel at home.

School progress displayed at Lincoln School in Gospel Village yesterday with a concert and student exhibition. About fifty 700 persons attended, many parents, as Miss Josephine M. Boldin led music instruction and display of drawings, weaving, basketry, penwork, and mechanical samples. Proceeds support purchasing a pane for the Lincoln building and candy booths contributed revenue.
Henry LeMieux, a bridge hammering worker, was struck in the right eye by a rivet fragment while removing a steel structure at Baxton & Maine works near Montpelier. He traveled to Boston for specialist care after initial examination warned of possible permanent damage. doctors hope removal of debris may restore sight. LeMieux, from Lawrence, Massachusetts, was aided by fellow workers as the incident halted the rivet operation.
Mt Sinai Temple Nobles of the Myr the Shrine held its quarterly meeting in Montpelier last evening with Potentate Joe W. Juckeon of Marre presiding. Teas in charge were Gideon of Bellows Pyle, Elroy Whitaker of Fiarré, CH Heaton of Monty Peter, Dean Town of Karte. Six dozen were present including Moretown’s HW A Maylett and Webster’s B.C. Davide, Windsor’s KM of Windsor, and Easre’s William Sills.
George W. Lynde owner carried $3,000 insurance as three mills at Mil village burned, threatening cottages and the town, with the polishing mill and sawmill destroyed. Firemen and volunteers saved most homes though major loss fell on Lynde's facilities and nearby storage. Court action not noted.
