Germany states it planned hostile moves toward the United States and sought an offensive alliance with Mexico to balance what it calls an alignment with a new foe, as the war in Europe escalates and rumors of U.S. involvement grow.
German press ordered not to print about secret U S Mexican communications. Despatch cites instructions to Mexico's liaison to offer alliance if war with the United States begins, warning of treachery on American soil and possible resignations of Zimmermann and Von Bernstorff.
Guadalajara March 3 Mexico's provisional foreign minister denied the government had been approached by Germany to form an alliance against the United States. William McGrath Jr died in Chicago of typhoid pneumonia. His body is to arrive in Waterbury for a funeral at St Andrew's church Monday at 9 30. He was born July 13 1870 in Duxbury and lived here several years before moving to Lowell Worcester and finally Chicago where he worked for the Lake Shore and Chicago. He leaves a wife Read Steehan, his parents Mr and Mrs William McGrath, a sister Mrs Harry Lewis, and four brothers Kennedy Mary Edward Johnny and Tease. His parents recently buried another son who died in Texas.
President Wilson signed the post office appropriation bill forbidding shipment of liquor into prohibition states. The measure, approved by the Senate without a roll call, carries an appropriation of 850 million dollars was enacted in Washington.
