French trenches in the Woevre district were penetrated after a spirited infantry assault but Paris reports the Germans were driven out. The clash highlights ongoing fighting on the Western Front as authorities confirm updates on troop movements and battlefield outcomes.
After a lull near Verdun a German offensive resumes in the Woevre sector with a violent bombardment and a French counterattack at Fresnes ten miles southeast of Verdun. Paris fronts say the Verdun drive merely paused, with German losses estimated between 125000 and 130000 by Entente sources.
Berlin via London reports the German official statement says French forces sacrificed men in a counter attack on Fort Douaumont with no success. The Franco Russian front situation remains unchanged according to the communication.

Jauden March 2 The German emperor left the Verdun front and returned to Germany Tuesday according to a Rotterdam dispatch to the Daily Mail.
Albert Roper a 71 year old Lowell florist was found murdered last night in his greenhouse on Plemont Street Tewksbury Center. He was discovered with a wound to the head and his money and clothing disturbed investigators think a robbery motive is likely. The killing occurred between 9 and 10 pm as Roper tended carnations before preparing to visit a village store. The crime is under Boston market reports with authorities reviewing evidence and possible suspects.
Washington reports that President Wilson told Chairman Flood of the foreign affairs committee he would consent to no compromise on the armed ships issue. Officials say a vote of confidence in a resolution endorsing the president while warning Americans about belligerent ships is politically sensitive. Flood later expressed belief a resolution agreeable to the president could pass in the committee.
Cambridge March 2 Fire started in a cool shed of the Mead Morrison Co and spread through the plant threatening the nearby tenement district. 7000 tons of soft coal burned. total loss estimated at 1000000 with the Mead Morrison building used as a storehouse and Albert M Brown estimating damage.
A fire in Brockton Massachusetts last night destroyed the four story Brockton public market building, causing about 1000000 in damage. The Hoet Moor above housed many offices and cab rooms. all occupants escaped without injury. Ownership is listed as James and Embert Howard. Market stock loss estimated at 875000.
New York reports Jon Grant Lyman, arrested after fleeing to St. Petersburg Florida, confessed en route that he could have netted a million dollars more if allowed six weeks longer on John JH. Putnam & Co. He claimed many investors were of average intelligence and boasted of preying on them as federal authorities prepared to arraign him in a mail fraud indictment.
Wireless dispatches from Montevideo claim British cruisers intercepted a German auxiliary cruiser Moewe near the Brazilian coast and captured her. Some reports suggest the vessel might be the Roon, with a possible transfer to the island of Trinidad for custody.

New York March 2 The Italian steamship Guiseppi Verdi left New York late yesterday for Naples and Genoa under the Austro German submarine policy. The craft carried 173 passengers including two Italian born American citizens in steerage. Lifeboats fitted with air tanks were added two months ago to the after deck.
The Italian government confirms that armed merchant ships will continue to carry armament for defensive purposes. Count Mar sh notes that, despite German and Austrian commands concerning sinking armed merchantmen, Italian vessels will defend themselves and only use artillery defensively.

William E Carroll former Barre resident died in Kearny New Jersey Saturday evening funeral held at St Monica's church this morning at 1130 officiated by Rev P M Mc Kenna. Bearers were John Carroll Henry Carroll Arthur Carroll John Riley John Marrion and Francis Grady. Interment in Catholic cemetery on Beckley Street.

Waterbury March 2 William Hill former resident of Moretown died at his son's home in Waterbury Center after an illness of pneumonia. The funeral will be held from the parsonage at the Center Saturday, burial at Septh Deixhury. He was born in Lewell, Minnesota, 79 years ago and lived many years in Eeforeetown. He leaves a wife and several children including Rev. Wilbur F. Hill and Irving Hill.
