A five man gang broke into a Royal Bank branch at Montreal West this morning. A member was killed during the ensuing gunfight with residents. Four other robbers escaped on snowshoes, pursued by a citizen posse through deep snow. The dead bandit remains unidentified.
A six story building on State Street, occupied by the Atlantic Maritime Company, was destroyed by fire. The blaze, starting early morning from spans tanenus contustion, caused an estimated loss of 850,000. The occupants were wholesale grocers.
A fire broke out yesterday afternoon in Wentworth Hall the oldest dormitory at Dartmouth. The blaze raged for about an hour tying up the volunteer fire department as students tossed belongings from windows. The cause is thought to be faulty wiring. Built in 1900 the building stood before a modern Dartmouth hall and will be renovated for use by Thayer School engineers. Damage estimated around 300 dollars.
New York March 2 William Bayard Cutting prominent lawyer and director of several corporations died after a private telegram said he became seriously ill with indigestion while on a special train home from the West. He was 72 and had long led civic affairs including roles in the civil service commission and tenement-house commission. Oakdale Long Island estate cited as a show place.
An eastbound express on the Nowth and Albany railroad struck and killed three Italian section hands today. The workers were standing on the tracks and did not hear the foreman's warning cry.
March 2 in Shreveport Louisiana Policeman Porter Sanders was struck by several Black individuals while attempting to detain them. Within an hour two Black suspects were fatally hurt when a police officer resisted arrest.
St Louis, March 2. For the first time a heavier than air craft carried a man shaped from an airplane to land safely by parachute. Capt Albert Berry, rode with pilot Janine from Kin food aviation field to Jefferson Barracks. Berry descended by parachute after a quick rope release as the machine hovered and then landed amid cheering soldiers.

William Dera, master of the Glendower barge, was acquitted today by a Boston US court jury in the murder of Captain Charles J. Wyman found aboard the barge towed into Boston Harbor last June. The body was discovered off Minot’s Light and details of the case centered on the barge towed from New York. Degrall planned to continue seafaring after the acquittal.
Mareh ti Augustyy Seaver a former governor candidate in Mannauntts was found guilty on 24 counts of forging nomination papers. Patrick Sheetan also convicted on four counts for obtaining names. Jury imposed a fine of 100 dollars after the verdict.
The Connecticut and Wells River Valley Board of Trade banquet at Knights of Pythias hall on Thursday drew a large Raleigh crowd from Seaith Ryegate and Wells River. Editor W. J. Bigelow of the St Johnsbury Caledonian gave the principal address as others spoke. Outstanding music and several local attendees contributed to a successful event with a warm afterglow.

Rutland March 2 Vermont officials expect a solid Taft delegation to the national Republican convention. Governor John A Mead states no pledge was made to Taft and that Vermont supporters are largely in his favor, with some skepticism about a guaranteed delegation. He predicts Vermont will participate fully in the campaign for Taft’s renomination and election, while noting uncertainty about the final composition of the delegation.
In Vergennes a thief broke into a shop during Thursday night and stole 37 fountain pens two bead strings thirteen fat chuina two silver chains four Ywraneches and eight jackknives valued by Woot AV. S. Bristol. Officer Demag pursued and arrested the suspect after a chase with help from Sheriff Allen. Brown faces transfer back to Vergennes jail for the return of the booty.
In Burlington on March 2 a civil suit by Alice Palmer against Opinion Publishing Co. over the loss of toes from a printing press accident at Brantford on April 1, 190k is before the United States court. Plaintiff alleges negligent handling near the press. defense is by Stickney Sargent Skeels. Charles Parker of Montpelier testified about the Bahrack prow involved.
Fire at Willer post office near Whity River Junction early yesterday morning around 3 39 o clock was contained before the eagle room could be breached. Evidence points to an attempted burglary with an inflammable device but the blow open effort failed. Loss estimated at about one thousand dollars.
In Lawrence Mass March 2 sentiment grows that two months of industrial conflict may end next week with many idle operatives ready to accept a five percent wage increase offered by most mill owners. The Industrial Workers of the World oppose the raise and a large group supports remaining on strike to demand more concessions and the release of Josep J Ritter and allies from jail.
London reports March 2 that the coal miners strike paralyzes key ports and iron works across the country. Docks at Swansea and Cardiff halt, tin plate works slow, coal shortages ripple through iron and steel sectors and food prices rise nationwide despite no direct disturbances.
The sixth annual circuit meeting for Vermont and eastern Canada held at Jimelson fuse approved five stake races and one free for all. Officers including Secretaries Waterman Channetl and others attended. President Channel reelected. O F Benson named to discuss joining with Green Mountain circuit. Minutes noted and fair workers entertained by N P B Wheeler and F L Davin.
James Currier died early this morning after a pneumonia illness at his step-mother Mrs. Mary Bailey's Bailey Street residence. He was fifty five, never married, and had worked at the B S Prior plant on North Main Street. Funeral arrangements not yet announced. A temperance meeting and debate is planned Sunday evening at the opera house, featuring Mr. Baran, inviting all to hear before next Tuesday's vote.
South Barre Grange held its organizational meeting at Unity Temple with 79 charter members. State Organizer Deputy A J Whitcomb installed officers led by Mrs A KE Whiteambh and others. A post-installation repast followed, with gifts and thanks voiced to Deputy Whitcomb.
Representatives from manufacturers and the fire department met with the Gre committee of the board of orders last evening in Havre city council chamber. Knox Co and the LoFnenee car were represented as potential makes for the new motor fire truck with money already appropriated for Havre. No definite decision emerged, and the committee will proceed cautiously in selecting the machine.

Rev A C Griffin curate of St Mate jen s church was thrown into the snow when frightened horse and buggy spooked at Pearl and Mary streets yesterday. He escaped unhurt and bystanders helped calm the driver with no damage reported.
Supporters of L. H. Thurston for mayor will meet in room C in Conchin block this evening at 7 o clock for a discussion of the election and to hear a talk on issues and plans.
Mark B. Foster, longtime treasurer for Hardwick village, vanished four years ago after a $5,000 to $6,000 shortage in town and private accounts. Detective work led to his arrest in Vermont. he will be returned to Caledonia County for trial after extradition. Foster, 44, born Brooklyn, has a music background and a history as a bookkeeper before moving to Vermont. He traveled widely before ending up in Reston for detention.
A team of two horses attached to a wagon crashed through a storefront window near the Currier building after pulling free near the Nichole and Currier blocks. One horse reared and stopped, the other was thrown to the ground as the sleigh shattered glass. No injuries are noted and the scene drew attention from nearby shopkeepers.
