Paris June 23 German forces renewed attacks along the Aisne front near Vauxaillon and southeast of Filain while intensifying efforts against positions north of Freidmont where they gained no advantage. An official report says they sacrificed much without progress.
An American freight steamer fended off a German submarine after a June 6 encounter off Genoa. The U boat fired a torpedo that missed by 20 feet while navy gunners fired four shots, with a hit on the periscope and another on the water where the submarine vanished. It marks the second such self defense reported in two days.
Fifty American aviators reached Nice France to begin instruction at the Zeppelin depot. French comrades accorded a hearty welcome as the unit joins the early arrivals already reported from June 20 in a navy flying corps detachment. The group includes four expert fliers and many with combat experience.
The president issues a proclamation seeking 70,000 unmarried men under 40 to join the regular army this week. The move signals a return to volunteer force calls despite the selective draft, aiming to bolster U S strength for a future expeditionary effort in Europe.
Washington reports official Liberty loan subscriptions totalled 3,035,226,850 with an oversubscription near 62 percent. More than 4,000,000 people bought bonds, led by the New York district with 1,186,298,400. Subscriptions varied by district with sums from 850 to 10,000 and special large allocations. The first instalment of 18 percent for 60,000,000 is due June 28.

Alfredo Cocchi of Bologna Italy confessed to murdering Ruth Cruger of New York in February after she visited his shop for skate sharpening. He said jealousy drove the act and claimed only two days of acquaintance before her disappearance, which led to her body being found buried in his motorcycle shop basement.
Orman P. Ray died at his Burlington home at age 80. A lawyer and Civil War veteran, he served as Chittenden County clerk for 23 years starting in 1882. He was born in Irasburg in 1837 and survived by two sons, William of St. Louis and P C Ray of Evanston, IL.
Greenshoro June 24 The opening exercises for the tenth anniversary of the Bret Sunday school convention in New England were held at the Congregational church. A large attendance was expected for Saturday when centennial services will be held at the sugar grove first convention site. Rev B C Hayes led devotion and Rev Aloyd Burtington gave welcome. Hon Mr Boyd outlined the gathering’s purpose to boost Sunday school work across New England. Closing addresses came from other state general secretaries present.
The case of Sim and poets involving E. M. Castro of ianiteville in Magia was heard. Castro was put on probation with a payment of two thinks. later he appealed for leniency after an April arrest for pressoll liquor and reversed a prior not guilty plea.
Bethel granite company awarded a contract for a Kansas City Maine mausoleum project requiring about 5000 cable feet of Thethel granite. The work will keep the present force employed at the quarries and cutting plants for about six weeks after the St Paul mausoleum completion. June 22.
Mrs T M Chapman of Middlebury injured when an automobile overturned on Porter Hill near Burlington. Jessie Chapman, wife of T M Chapman, injured in late afternoon accident while returning from a Corewall event. Chapman family among those affected. local scene described.
Clayton Burke 29 a Montpelier photographer for the Cutler studio collapsed on a Barre to Montpelier trolley near Intercity Park and died en route to the police station. Authorities say heart failure likely, with autopsy possible. Burke, a Keene native, had recently returned to work after a prior studio term in Claremont New Hampshire.
James Reid a longtime Barre granite cutter and active fraternal figure died at 9 a.m. at 18 Laurel Street. Born in Aberdeen, he moved to the U.S. 24 years ago and settled in Barre in 1843. He leaves a wife Elisabeth Chines, a mother, five sisters, a brother in Britain, and various lodge memberships. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
Francis Matthews, who appeared at the Montpelier recruiting station seeking enlistment, was brought to Montpelier after being taken from Barre. He allegedly admitted to Deputy Marshal Lackey that he did not register for the selective draft act. Matthews spent the night in jail and awaits action by United States Commissioner Shurtleff. He claimed his registration card was left in Waterbury where he had worked.
A stick of dynamite exploded on the Lewiston branch tracks of the Maine Central railroad near the North street bridge in Waterville. One rail was torn up and nearby houses had their windows shattered. A freight train had just passed and another was approaching. neither was damaged. Police suspect a crank laid the charge and probe threats tied to rumored strike breakers replacing hundreds of striking repair workers.
A near filled opera house audience praised the second performance of The Girl from Broadway and gave a big ovation to the Vermont regimental band which earlier played in the park and again at the theater. Chaplain Paul D Mt addressed recruits to cheers. Red Cross nurses circulated pledge cards as the show concluded. The manager noted box office and adowner ticket sales may affect future plans and fund prospects. The military band, led by Rosene MacIver, left Fort Ethan Allen after two days, leaving a strong local impression.
Friday evening at the convent the Sisters of Mercy music pupils presented a fall program. The event featured senior and junior choruses, duets, trios, and numbered selections by Leona Mloulns Ki, Marion Robertson, Pat the Fairy Waltz, The Mutterflies, Heather Rose, Golden Lock, Mandolin Serenade, Mignonette, The Rose's Desire, The Roll Call, Summer, Silver Nymph, Flower Song, Spin Lassie Spin, Com Amore, Angel's Dream, Falling Water, The Storm, Within that jee, and Wedd March among others. Parents and friends praised the performers for their excellent training.
A committee led by Alexander A Mile and E J Ratchwider was instructed at Manufacturers' ball to fire the plan for the association to carry its own disability insurance. The meeting discussed stability of finances and the new private rate, with a report to be tallied by the president later this year.
The Barre Red Cross fund crosses the four thousand dollar mark just before noon as subscriptions pour in from diverse groups. Weston Cate Jr. gave the welcome, William McIntosh spoke for the graduating class, Judge Darling praised benefactor Tray Cules, and Dr. Blackmer recalled student days. Everett Stanley Wallis won the Foster prize scholarship for high class standing. The class voted to extend a cement walk from the main building to Summer Street, funded by incremental square contributions with class year numbers.
