Rome reports Austrian efforts to widen the northeastern Montello salient failed as Italian forces held the Piave front. A crossing near Nervesa was checked, while Italian and Allied air activity continued. Premier Orlando said Austrian losses were heavy and Italian prisoners were taken.
Washington reports enemy patrols northwest of Chateau Thierry and in the Woevre district sustained considerable losses. Artillery fighting continues in Chateau Thierry, Woevre, Lorraine, with Section A noting active patrolling and machine gun fire. Section B reports nothing to report.
Washington June 21 new rules from Provost Marshal General Crowder tighten the work or fight draft approach by labeling games and sports as nonuseful. He said baseball players are currently viewed as nonproductive and that boards must await local appeals before any ruling.
A severe heat wave grips the northwest area with farmers unable to work. Wheat fields in Kansas and Oklahoma report damage while northern Texas farming operations are affected by the heat.
British troops carried out extensive operations in the Arras region and south toward Albert. German attempts to regain ground near Merrix and the Flanders front were repulsed. The war office said a few prisoners and machine guns were captured and many enemy casualties inflicted.

Copenhagen June 21 four residents of Berlin attempted flight from Germany to avoid Thuringia control in two planes. One landed in Denmark, while the other was sunk in the Baltic by German ships. The surviving crew included a reserve officer and a student from the University of Berlin who fled from Hor Beckum.
Buffalo June 21 machinists and tool makers strike at Curtice Aeroplane and Motor Corp called off. Workers ordered back to work. Leaders planned return to Buffalo with Major Giebell to adjust the situation.
Newport dispatch reports Herbert Billings shot and killed Kimberly yesterday at his residence. Billings, a Cane Shall ID grave ago, had been living on a small farm near Paria. The case, tied to a local agency, prompts a June 24 change noted by the Pun Journal.
Paris reports First Lieut. Frank Baylies, 22, of New Bedford became an American member of the French flying corps. He fought a four-on-one German air attack six miles inside enemy lines, his burning machine crashing after a brief, valiant attempt to prevail. He had 12 aerial victories since Feb 9 and earned the Legion of Honor on June 1.
War Department officials report American forces hold a 38 mile front along six locations on the western line with others with British and French units. The House Military Committee learned there is no plan to cut Atlantic troop movement and that US troops will be ready by September. Italian front fighting was noted as not yet serious for the allies and rapid fire gun production is increasing to support American actions.
W H Jeffery state probation officer returns from Boston where he joined Maine New Hampshire and Vermont delegates hosted by Massachusetts board. Vermont speakers urged trained workers and humane child care while noting Vermont has no trained workers yet. Also reports on marriages licenses wartime movements and local officials in Montpelier and Rutland and Vermont war department notices.
A memorial service for Misha May, a nearly five decades member of the county bar, was held by the Caledonia County Bar Association in St Johnsbury. Judge J Glewson presided, with remarks from Judge Walter Smith and draft of resolutions by Judge Harland Howe. Personal tributes came from several judges and notable figures including Gov Henry Ide and James Camp.
The Vermont Funeral Directors and Embalmers association plans its annual convention in St Johnsbury on August 28. The executive committee met in Barre and abandoned Barre as the site, setting St Johnsbury as headquarters at the local undertaker's house. Secretary A F Hale of Bradford heads the committee with FL Dwyer, T E Gurney, and G E Perry as members.
Goddard Seminary marked its fourth commencement with 30 graduates and valedictorian Rachel E Hollister. The ceremony honored 1918 enlistees and featured speeches on sacrifice, patriotism, and civic duty by Principal O B Hollister Judge H Darling and students including Annie E Sargent Leola M Taft Senath A Soul Fairfield Charlotte F Soule and others.

Cipriano Canales reports his brother Claurio Canales may have vanished two months ago from 14 Hill Street Montpelier after mental health treatment. Claurio, a stonecutter born in Montpelier, last lived with Cipriano and is described as 27 years old, five feet eight, about 170 pounds with a dark complexion and grey eyes. Family fears possible relapse or danger and has notified authorities.
Jae Stacy daughter of Prospect Street residents married Ruby Monnette of Champlain New York at St Joseph church Burlington. Rev J A Lavouture performed the ceremony. The couple will reside on Prospect Street with a reception and gifts reported from the event.
A grim accident left eleven cattle suffocated in a yard after an unknown event. The animals, valued at about 200 dollars, were reportedly owned by Joke F min of Marre who taught atemt 20 head. The incident occurred yesterday morning, with the tail end of the note unclear and authorities investigating.
About 600 attendees witnessed Spaulding High School’s class day at the opera house. The program featured a class motto Today Divides Tomorrow, patriotic essays and poems from seniors, and a class history recital. Several graduates enlisted in Vermont regiments, with bonds presented to Liberty Loan and Barre war chest funds, as the ceremony honored service and student achievement.
