A Chicago and Northwestern passenger train wrecked near Whitney Nebraska as the sagging railroad bridge failed dumping the train into a creek. Four people died and 34 were injured, eight in serious condition as three cars left the bridge.
Four killed and eight injured when Chicago and Northwestern No 608 wrecked near Whitney Nebraska after a bridge over Big Cotton Wood Creek sagged during a cloudburst. Engine broke from tender and rammed 600 feet along the ties. Sleeping car remained atop the track as others piled on the bank.
A first hearing in the Frank G. Howland bankruptcy case will be held in Montpelier Thursday morning to appoint a trustee. M F Denalair of fesex fined for parking violations. The tenth anniversary celebration in Montpelier honored 52 graduates of the Washington County Grammar School who received diplomas marking their graduation from Montpelier High School. Mason S. Stone awarded diplomas as students performed a formal program including marches, songs, essays, and orations.
Frankfort Kentucky June reports John Fallis grocer escaped during night from a combined store and dwelling after firing on officers who sought to arrest him over an altercation involving his son. Deputies surrounded the building, fired rounds into it, and it was set ablaze.
The jury in Anna Sloan v. Thomas Mahar at Montpelier federal court awarded $100 after two days of trial. Sloan sought $20,000 alleging excessive speed caused a 1920s Packard collision after a Hydeville musicale at the Mahar home in Fair Haven. Travelers Insurance defended. Mahar alleged mechanical failure. A Rutland county case is pending.
Miss Mafalda Cattanen daughter of Mrs Angelina Cattanen married Domenic Rocca son of Mr and Mrs Frederick Rocca of Milfont. Beaer James I Mackay officiated at 1 PM at the round of the bride. Attendants included Miss Margeret Aoera and Amelio Cattanon. The bridal party wore white and pink silk with carnations. Out-of-town guests joined a luncheon and the couple left for a wedding trip to Boston before settling in Milford.
Norfolk County Superior Court in Dedham today moved Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti’s trial outdoors to examine the automobile linked to the 1920 South Brain tree paymaster murder. Jurors and officials observed a black touring car with a right rear door bulletin as the state seeks to tie the vehicle to the crime scene and the getaway.

Flora Eaton Priest of Qanten NY attends commencement at Goddard seminary. A public flower show by Barre Woman’s Club is set for Saturday at the American Legion room with vase donations via telephone for pickup. A display by Horsford of Charlotte planned. pine needle baskets by Mrs Gould from Florida featured. Friends of Frank Craddock celebrate their sixth anniversary with a surprise party at Beatrice Callaghan’s home on Mark Street. theater party plus dinner hosted by Mark Cutler.
Goddard Seminary alumni held a full day program starting with a business meeting in the girls dorm parlors. Two trustees were elected to replace Dr John Ridlon of Chicago and Dr E W Bailey of Trans ville, bringing the board to ten. The event drew alumni from classes as far back as 1878 and included a banquet, performances, speeches, a maple tree planting, and the attendance of former principal Dr Hollister.
A commencement recital at Goddard Seminary drew a large turnout of alumni, students, and townspeople who applauded the diverse program. Betty Brown and Mary Lease guided a long lineup of vocal and piano numbers including operatic pieces, French songs, and selections from Wagner, Mendelssohn, and Godard.
Goddard seniors enjoyed a day on the campus despite chilly wind and unsettled skies. Miss Mary E Lease and classmates performed and President Crowell of Hines praised the event as a fitting celebration of the class’s future, with a student poem and reflections on democratic science and architecture.
Governor Hartness illness prompts immediate vacancy as Sheldon of Fair Haven takes over as state tax and game commissioner. Captain Shriden led Vermont detachment 20th Division battles prior to injury in October 1900 discharge in May 1900. Sheldon later wrote articles for Saturday Evening, Literary Digest and World’s Work.
Funeral notice for James Piper who died Saturday morning in the city. The service and burial details are incomplete but list mourners including Timothy Murphy James Mivephy Hew Ryda Amtres Mile Bot Moiyes and Tetra McCendy. Cemetery and further rites are partially indicated with scattered words.
Barre quarry workers reject proposed wage reduction 18 to 180 after a Boston conference. Special meeting of Graniteville branch No 12 of the Quarry Workers International Union voted against the eight to thirteen cent cuts in most labor classes set to take effect July 1 1921. Lumpera Boxers and Derrick men branch No 50 will vote Saturday with ballot hours 1 to 6.
Funeral services were held at 2 PM yesterday at First Baptist Church for the late sea Hedberg of 41 Park Street. Rev Bod Lehigh officiated. Burial followed in Hope Cemetery. A large assembly of relatives and friends attended. Continuous floral tributes signified the esteem for the deceased.
The funeral of John J. Murray, found in Stevens Monday morning, was held in the afternoon at the church. Rev W E Archibald delivered comforting words. Interment was at Wilson Cemetery. Attending from out of town were Mrs J Murray and Katherine Murray of Windsor, and Mr and Mrs Morrison and Mrs Parker of Gretna.
