U S infantry overwhelm Villa's forces as cavalry pursues retreating rebels after a morning engagement at Juarez Mexico. Mexican federals and rebels clashed prompting cross border firing into El Paso.
Brig Gen Erwin leads 3600 troops as artillery strikes Villa rebels southeast of Juarez at 10:35 a.m. and U.S. infantry withdraws to El Paso. Reports say Villa forces flee toward Guadalupe opposite Fabens Texas with cavalry in pursuit. Casualties include Private Sam Tuscin and Private Casey wounded or killed. several rebels silenced at a riverbank fight near the Rio Grande.
El Paso June 11 American troops crossed into Mexico after a night battle near a race track outside Juarez. United States cavalry held east and southeast positions while the 24th infantry and other units dislodged Villa forces with rifle and machine gun fire. American casualties included two killed and seven wounded on the U.S. side. Military headquarters reported 3,600 soldiers in Mexico within minutes of the border order.
Washington June 1 There can be no misunderstanding between the United States and Mexico regarding border movement at El Paso Secretary Baker said there is a distinct understanding for action to protect life on the American side Only when necessary have Americans crossed briefly to disperse bandit forces The sole purpose of the American soldier is to protect life on the American side.
Secretary Baker told the Senate military committee that a 300000 man army was inadequate and urged Congress to provide for a 609000 force until a permanent policy is set. He cited needs on the Mexican border, Germany occupation, and guarding vast government supplies both overseas and at home. He opposed prohibitions on buying land and funding for educational and recreational facilities. Meanwhile, U.S. forces continued operations against Villa, with rifle fire subsiding as Villa troops were driven into hills. An American soldier killed a Mexican sniper at Ninth and Stanton while orders to shoot snipers were issued.
Mrs Eliza Johonnott died at the home of Mrs Eva Lawson on East Montpelier road at 4 a m after a five year illness. Born Berlin November 14 1891 she was the daughter of John and Emaline Wheaton. She married Horace Johonnott of Burlington forty years ago and lived with Mrs Lawson the past 24 years. She is survived by two half sisters two nephews and one niece with a brother Porter Wheaton deceased in California. Funeral from the Lawson home Friday at 2 p m burial in Elmwood cemetery Rev James Ramage to officiate.
Paris dispatch reports the Allied reply to Germany’s counter proposals will be delivered at Versailles around four o clock. Count Von Brockdorff Rantzau to receive the document while a special train stands by to take the German delegates to Weimar. Editors and printers worked overnight to prepare the revised treaty for presentation.
A Barre community drive to fund the homecoming reception for soldiers and sailors launched this morning. Business leaders and workers from diverse trades are contributing with a minimum gift of one dollar. The effort, modeled after war drives, aims to cover the city and plans include an 8 o'clock rain event, air flights, a parade, and other celebratory features.
Five automobile accidents were reported this morning to the secretary of state from weekend driving. L I Stone of Barre collided with a car owned by Thomas Mikklewon of Barre Town at Prospect and Main streets Saturday afternoon. Mrs Hatch and companions from St. Albans were struck by a car owned by Mr Vayo of Highgate Springs Saturday causing $16 damage. Vayo's fast driving is blamed. Nine drivers were reported as intoxicated or under investigation.
At the A F L convention in Atlantic City P H McCarthy reports Postmaster General Burlesons order granting bargaining rights to electrical and telephone workers will apply to all post office employees including telegraph operators. Delegates debated scope and impact on the commercial telegraphers strike as the committee urged uniform application of the new policy.
Albert Johonnott aged 93 died after a long illness following kidney trouble. A longtime leather and furniture merchant, he helped establish Tanneries in Barre and Berlin Montpelier and served as banker and public official. Survived by wife Mary J Parker two children Arthur and Nellie with grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral at his home Wednesday at 3 40 pm with burial in Green Mount cemetery.
Rt Rev. Jr Rice D D bishop of Burlington confirmed 169 at St Monica’s with 150 girls and 19 adults in a ceremonial mass attended by Knights of Columbus and local officials. He urged faithfulness, priestly vocation, temperance pledge and spiritual warfare against bad influences, noting future service for Church. In Montpelier, St Augustin’s Church saw a second class of 235 confirmed, including 202 children, with the bishop preaching.
Miss Gertrude Smith of Montpelier and Arthur Tee of Barre wed by Rev. Charles St. John at Bethany church parsonage in Montpelier then left for a home trip stopping in St Albans and Montreal. The bride, Waterbury native, worked in Montpelier telephone office. groom, son of Mrs. Evaline Huse, served in France and is employed by Jones Brothers. They will reside at 15 Hill Street Barre. Separately, corporations filed articles with Vermont secretary of state including W. H Campbell & Co of Rochester and Tryde Drug Co of Brandon with listed signers.
A Vickers Vimy bombing machine nearly plunged into the sea during a remarkable flight when it went into a flat spin. Wireless equipment failed early, but the crew managed a harrowing recovery and continued the mission.
London reports Captain Alcock and Lieutenant Brown finished the first nonstop trans Atlantic crossing in a Vickers Vimy bomber. The 1,860 nautical mile flight from St Johns to Galway took 16 hours and 12 minutes. The plane landed in a bog, damaged, but both aviators survived with bruises.
London reports the Vicker Vimy biplane piloted by Captain Alcock crosses the Irish Sea and lands near the Vimy wreck site. Lieutenant Arthur Brown praises the navigation while the other aircraft lands and is wrecked on soft ground. Both aviators are shaken but aided to safety with minor injuries and dazed condition.
