In Livermore Falls Maine on June 15 William Brown in a state of melancholy hanged his son then killed himself. The boy, blindfolded with two layers of black cloth, stood on a basket over a well. The discovery follows family losses linked to Gettysburg veterans, with toy soldiers found near the scene suggesting a child’s belief in marching troops.
Washington reports the War Department has ordered students from Fort Ethan Allen and Martinsburg to Burlington for a military training camp between July 6 and August. Eligible are college and high school graduates aged 17 to 30, who will be designated upon application.
Vermont Governor Fletcher, visiting Manchester, condemns reactionary groups blocking progress. He praises progressive sentiment in Vermont, calls for liberal Republican unity, and notes Roosevelt era lessons guiding his views on court reform and party direction.
Raymond Dwyer escaped from Shirley industrial school with two others three weeks ago. Dr W H Muswell, a longtime Wells River citizen, married Mee C Deming widow of pioneer Frank Deming on a Saturday ceremony at the bride’s home on Main Street. Only nearby relatives attended as Mrs Hattie Worthen of Littleton provided wedding music.

Workington D C June. Harry K Thaw was denied release on bail pending Supreme Court review of extradition from New Hampshire to New York. Court recess held without ruling on Intermountain rate or other cases. Also declined request to move Thaw to Pittsburgh to testify in his father's estate settlement. Judge Aldrich had ordered release on habeas corpus. Supreme Court will decide next.
June 13 report from Turlington notes Captain William Warren Rockwell died Saturday at 9 PM after an appendicitis operation at Mary Fletcher Memorial Hospital. Born November 15, 1868 in Albury Center, he spent a lifetime on Lake Champlain and Lake George, rising from waiter to pilot and captain on multiple steamers. He later served as US inspector of hulls for the district and belonged to several Masonic and western lodges. Survived by wife Annie Louise, daughter Dorothy, sons Harry and Herman, ten siblings, and two sisters.
Randolph June 11 The body of Guy Ripley was found mangled one mile north of South Royalton Sunday and brought to Randolph where grandparents Mr and Mrs Joseph Brown visited after his arrival from Randolph Center. The remains showed marks consistent with being struck by trains and near what is known as the long bridge. The tragedy affected the village as relatives recall his upbringing and family ties.
President Wilson, in Washington, signed the Panama tolls exemption rent bill after Senate changes and House agreement. He attributed support for the administration trust program to a campaign by certain interests and commented on the psychological mood he had noted.
Northfield June 13 George Burton Hall aged 70 died Saturday at his son Pome Hal Fast street home after a year with Brights disease and complications. Funeral held this afternoon at 1 o clock in Congregational church at pase Rev John W Gates officiating. Hall lifelong Roxbury resident and former town clerk for many years. Civil War veteran, member of 6th Vermont and 17th United States regulars. Fraternal lodge member of Masonic and Odd Fellows. Son H Pearl Hall surviving.
The funeral of Mrs Joan Stott was held yesterday afternoon from the Presbyterian church of Graniteville with Rev. Fred McNell officiating. A long procession accompanied the remains to Wilson Cemetery for interment. Bearers named include William Christie, Sam McCreavie, John Henley, Louis Clark, Michael Ryan, Thomas Henley. Indicated attendees include Mr. and Mrs. Christie, Arlie Vivien, Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Young, and many others from Paxville and surrounding families.
A Saturday paper notes post-graduate graduates from the teachers' training at Spaulding High School. Names listed include Alleabeth Brown and Hazel Christa along with others like Ger alin Ratebelder and Bel Lienstmore, though some entries appear obscured in print.
Ludlow June 15 State Treasurer Deavitt met Gov Allen Vietcher at Chuckle Hill and offered a new 110000 bond from the American Surety Company of New York. The move seeks to supplement the existing American Fidelity bond under mandamus proceedings before the Supreme Court. The old bond remains in effect until the new bond is accepted and filed. readings will follow and be used as the basis of the case.
Michael J. Slattery of 4 Hill Street Montpelier took a large dose of Paris green on Sunday morning. He remained alive at Heaton hospital this afternoon but doctors gave little hope of recovery. His son William Slattery of Northfield found him ill and alerted Dr C Burr. The substance was found in a half emptied can in the victim’s room. Mrs Slattery was away from town at the time.
Active canvass for funds at Goddard Seminary seeks £2000 to cover remaining debt on the Alumni Hall. Ira Calef’s mini gift prompts John G. Morrison to offer £1000 if nine others subscribe £100 each. Five of ten $1000 subscribers already secured. Hollister to confer with friends as momentum grows. New Commercial association formed for recent graduates with officers Mrs. Dora Taylor and Miss Man Lake among leaders. Scholarship awards announced for 1914 with Miss Pardie Turner and Miss Helen Ristes receiving top prizes.
William Annie of Claremonnt North America was knocked from a motorcycle yesterday afternoon after trying to avoid pedestrians. He suffered a double fracture of the left leg and a crushed hip. The collision occurred when he made a sharp turn and was struck by a car driven by Otto Yuncker. They were taken to Haneover hospital by Mr. Potter, who rode on the motorcycle. Dr. G Kidders was the attending doctor.
