The Provost Marshal announced a day of grace for males who failed to register under the United States draft. In fear of an Indian war, authorities allowed registration attempts to proceed, while locals reported Indians dancing war dances near Tynarla Col Jane and some youths armed in the hills with liquor.
General Crowder in Washington said registrars have until noon to file reports so complete returns cannot be expected until late today. Governors were notified that those who in good faith failed to register may do so now, with a federal policy to complete registration. New Jersey reports 302,808 registered. census estimate was 309,543 at noon. No other state had issued a complete return by then.
June reports show nine men in Pittsburg arrested for failure to register. Anthony Crasniksky in Bristol and Anthony Kaulinois in Lawrence, both claimed older ages. The FBI announced twelve district arrests including Chicago Gary and Rockford. Concord delayed state returns as sheriffs must file with court clerks. Toledo saw four men arrested for failure to register for conscription service.
Washington details an agreement allowing unnaturalized Italians in the United States to be recruited by the Italian government while naturalized Italians assist American agriculture and industries. Recruitment would be voluntary and the plan is to be finalized with American officials through the Italian mission.
New York June 11 federal indictments for violation of the selective draft law were returned against three Columbia University students. The men named are Locals Kremar Sicher, self described as a citizen of the world, and Charles Phillym. They face charges connected with alleged anti conscription conspiracies as agents attempted to register them.
London reports British gains in two sectors on the Arras front during night operations south of the Souchez river. The electric power station in the area was captured. A raid south of Ypres yielded 75 prisoners including an officer. Active air war continued with twelve German planes shot down and six others forced down. Five British aircraft are missing.
Four German aircraft returning from a raid on England were destroyed, with two lost during progress. One British pilot shot down two raiders. Overall damage to the raiders was limited due to strong and vigorous English resistance.
British pilots destroyed four of ten returning German planes and two more were downed by anti aircraft fire. In the raid on Austria and surrounding areas sixteen German aircraft were involved. twelve were killed in the raid, with 36 injured. Civilian footage showed London and coastal towns reacting with shelter and alarms while weather aided the attackers. A Vienna report cited German losses near Jamiano with several officers and 6,400 men captured, and a pilot reportedly drowned after a crash at sea.
British attack yesterday penetrated German lines at one point near Berlin via London. Fighting continued in small trench sectors as described in today’s German army headquarters bulletin.

In Racine Wisconsin during June John Rolveh a foreign worker at a local tin plant was forced to kiss and salute the American flag after being told he would be arrested if he refused to register and fight. He was compelled to crawl on his knees with the flag spread over the floor before the demand.

It says Wilson's war is seen as unnecessary and immoral, reflecting a belief that Americans would fight if vital interests were at stake, while the paper claims the effort was a unilateral project. Baker is absent in Washington en route to North Carolina.
Rome reports Italy announces Albania’s independence as part of honoring nationality amid wartime principles. It notes Austria’s counter move granting Albania autonomy under Austrian protectorate as the rival proclamation.
A violent prison outbreak left one inmate dead eight seriously injured and several others hurt as a thousand convicts rioted. A rainstorm drove mutineers back to the cell house but they refused to move near National Guardsmen who ended the disturbance. Prison yard buildings and other structures suffered extensive damage totaling around 820000 dollars.
The funeral of Mrs Sila Bertrand, wife of Albert Bertrand, was held at St Monica’s Church on Foster Street. Burial followed at Hope Cemetery with a service featuring tributes from family and friends. Relatives named include Lafrance, Fortier, Tater, and Fedelin. Interment occurred at Hope Cemetery.
Washington reports an armed American steamer sunk a German submarine in a one and half hour fight. The submarine fired 43 shots and the steamer 25, with the last shot sending the sub underwater stern up before it disappeared. The steamer and its American naval crew suffered no damage.
Paris June 6 The ministry of marine reports the French steamer Orinoco defeated a German submarine in the Atlantic. Orinoco attacked on April 22 opened fire and the fourth shot sent the submarine to the bottom.
At St Monica’s church this morning 10 o clock Mixs Giovanina Bottinelli of 8 High Holborn street and Antonio Mazzolini of Randolph were married by Rev P M McKenna. The church was decorated and many witnessed the ceremony. The bride wore white crepe metier and carried white roses. bridesmaid wore pink crepe de chine. The couple will host a 7:30 wedding reception at Knights of Columbus hall and plan to reside in Randolph after a wedding trip.
Barre civic leaders and business figures gathered at an armory to discuss expanding Company C recruitment. Capt Sullivan and local speakers urged continued enlistment, with plans for further meetings and recruitment drives in Barre and nearby towns.
A total of 3092 men aged 21 to 30 were registered in Washington County yesterday, per the county clerk in Montpelier. All 10 towns reported. Montpelier, Barre Town, Northfield, and Waterbury lead. Fayette is lowest with 24.
Roger Donahue a 37 year old granite cutter and brother of Northfield’s police chief was found dead early last evening under a lumber pile near the city stone crusher in Montpelier. Two Italians found the body and notified the authorities who moved it to the Volholm undertaking establishment. An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death. The head showed two bruises possibly from a fall or a weapon. Donahue had worked for Jurras Bros nearby but had not worked recently. Police suspect alcohol may have contributed. He was born in Northfield about 37 years ago and leaves a sister Mrs Thomas Sheridan of Montpelier. Funeral plans have not been set.
Barre’s drive to sell Liberty bonds reports 115000 raised toward a 420000 quota. Banks unite in the campaign with the slogan Liberty Loan for Liberty Alone, urging quick public participation from small investors and higher earners alike. A $1000 bond donation was given to Barre City Hospital for a new X-ray machine.
