London June 2 American champion Waler Travis defeated Huron English champion by five and four to go to his fifth victory at the Sandwich tournament. With only two rounds left he has an excellent chance of winning the trophy.
St. Petersburg June 2 A dispatch says Iravian losses at Kinchow numbered 50 officers and 500 men killed wounded. Russian guns abandoned were rendered unusable.

Jeffer Hardwick and others witnessed a man named Burnham shoot himself on the Woodbury farm three miles from town. He was about 63, leaving a wife and four children. His wife tried to intervene but the weapon discharged into his temple. Authorities and neighbors responded as he died shortly after. The incident is attributed to temporary mental derangement possibly due to grief or intoxication.
Janet W H Whitcomb of Burlington died in Brooklyn New York yesterday. He had spent the winter there and was returning home when the summons came. Born in Northern New York he moved to Burlington in youth and later worked as a life agent for the Equitable Assurance Society, building a large business and gaining wide acquaintance across Vermont and northern New York. He was 0 years old.
The Central Vermont railroad offers a round trip excursion from Barre Middlesex Waterbury and nearby towns to Highgate Springs Friday in June. Trains depart early morning and return in Barre by late afternoon with reduced fares and a day off for residents to enjoy the resort again.

The Democrate of Barre held a caucus at the city courthouse with strong turnout and elected delegates to state and district conventions. James Higgins chaired the meeting with G Herbert Pape as secretary. A resolution urged the delegation to support ex Mayor Charles W Melcher for delegate at large to the Democratic National Convention in St Louis this July. Committees named to draft further slate included J W Leonard Donald McLeod and Patrick Brown. The slate passed unanimously with named state and district delegates and city committee selections for the coming year.
The annual convention of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Washington county closed at Montpelier after a successful gathering.
