Paris reports Premier Gaston Doumorgue’s cabinet resigns after a meeting to draft a statement. The main cause is the inability to control a majority in the Chamber of Deputies following recent elections. Disagreements over financial measures and three years military service add to the uncertainty.
President Wilson on his first press conference since the Mexican situation grew acute reiterated his stance that current business troubles are not unique to the United States. He barred questions on Mexico or mediation and argued prosperity would rebound if manufacturers see a coming recovery, insisting the tariff does not cause the downbeat mood.
Brattleboro reporting a forest fire at Sprout place on Guilford road owned by Crystal Spring Ice Co spread after yesterday afternoon, fanned by wind. A second alarm summoned many from Brattleboro and Guilford as 25 acres burned at a loss of 81000 before daylight. Origin unknown. Discovered by state observer on Stratton Mountain.
Edwin C White, judge of probate for Las Mouille district, died at his Hyde Park home Saturday at 6 15 am after illness. Born in Rylen in 1834, he long served as town clerk of Rylen and held various offices. He was appointed probate judge in 1860 and repeatedly reappointed. Survived by wife, son George E White of Montpelier, a brother, a sister, and other relatives. funeral held at his home, burial at Eden.
Washington June 1 a senate vote 23 20 referred a resolution to the interstate commerce committee asking the attorney general to state if New York Confederates fines constitute violation of Sherman antitrust law. The move prompted a free counsel brief from the interstate commerce committee. Senator Norma objects.
Reports from the scene of the Empress of Ireland disaster say nearly one hundred bodies have been identified after yesterday's recovery efforts by the tender Lady Grey and other boats. Ottawa, June 1, officials indicate a total loss of about 1,500 lives with 900 perished. A royal commission will investigate the sinking, with George Vaux named by Britain and Canada to lead the inquiry. witnesses will testify under oath.
Inmates at the state prison attended a Memorial Day service in the chapel. Afterward male prisoners raised a 40 foot flag in the yard as they watched a sports program and enjoyed three hours of recreation. Chancellor Walker plans a Saturday half holiday if progress continues. Secretary McAdoo, visiting with Mrs. McAdoo, was invited but could not attend.
Militant suffragettes destroy St Marys Church at Wargrave near the Thames and burn a Windsor mansion once tied to the duchy of Sutherland. Only a fragment of the 1598 church remains as firemen recover suffrage literature and a notice urging action against women.
Burlington Vermont reports the death of De Massa, a 25 year old Italian prisoner and witness in the Winooski shooting case. He died Saturday evening from acute bronchitis and laryngitis after hospital admission on May 15. He was taken to Lavigne's undertakers in Winooski. Funeral planned for Tuesday.
For contributors to the building fund Barre City hospital tranters appoint W A Drew as collector of pledges. Pledges may be paid to Drew or his assistant at Barre Savings Bank and Trust Co in the Howland tackle during banking hours. The first payment on pledges is now due.
Fragmentary OCR notes describe a survivor in St Johnsbury with mentions of Burt, Mem Laure Mert, and sailing to Europe aboard the Carmania. The text is garbled, obscuring dates, roles, and outcomes, but hints at a voyage to New York then Europe and possibly a court or memorial context.
Two men died and five were seriously injured at a Boston sewerage pumping station when sewer gas exploded. Victims include Martin Devereux of Roxbury and Thomas Hutler of East Boston. The blast demolished the screen building annex and hurled debris over 200 yards, blowing out skylights and damaging nearby structures. Jamie Metlovern, buried by bricks, survived.
In St Johnsbury on June 1 a collision between Albert Morey of Nashua New Hampshire and Mitto A Shattuck of St Johnsbury left Mrs Morey injured as she jumped clear. She was treated nearby and later joined the others to continue toward Gallapa Mille, home of the McDonald family.
A sextet from jail appeared in Ama tel Payette and nearby suspects charged with subsequent offenses. Magistrate Hy UW Beatt presided as Payette and others faced fines, costs, and short jail terms with several payments set or suspended, including Montpelier summer detention for Payette and multiple officers named for arrests.
Thomas Upton Upton of Woodeville and Miss Grier Gono of Montpelier wed this morning at St Algis Hue church Montpelier in a ceremony attended by family. The event occurred at 7230 Webowk with Rev William Sulliver officiating. The newly married pair plan to reside in Barre after a reception in eastern Cin. The telegraph operator post at the Maine railroad in Woodeville is noted among local connections.
Funeral services for William Marr of Marr & Gordon were held Saturday at 2 PM at his Franklin Street home followed by a Congregational church service. Attendees included Masons and Granite Lodge members with out of town relatives from London and Brookfield.
Mrs Esther Ruel mother of Mrs George Landers and a former Barry resident died suddenly at 1 pm yesterday at her daughter’s home in Montpelier after a brief illness. She was 84 and survived by four brothers, several children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held tomorrow at St Augustine’s church with burial in the Catholic Cemetery at Montpelier.
An automobile owned by J Kent Perley went over a 21 foot bank near Newport Saturday afternoon while returning from a pleasure trip. Passengers included John Branly, Mian Annie Merrill, May Kirn, and Kimball who injured an ankle. Others were Dr Motinwa, W B David, Ruth Draper, and Olin Merrill.
The second annual Vermont Association of Post Office Clerks and Vermont Association of Letter Carriers met Saturday afternoon in the city, with a banquet at 7 o clock. Allen M. Fletcher Edith A. Taylor and F. Puller of this city were elected chairs for the evening session. Hugh Kingsley presided, and about 100 delegates attended from Burlington Montpelier Fellows Falls Morre and nearby towns. Reports from the secretary were read, and officers were elected: president Misogh ME Fare Pellows Valle, secretary and treasurer M H Richardson Montpelier. The Vermont branch will hold its next meeting in W eventually Weattlehorn May 15, 1015. The Vermont branch of the National Association of Letter Carriers met at 2 PM in the Derwicek hotel parlory with about 20 members from Barre BelNis Fair Haven and surrounding towns. Officers elected: president Evland, vice president F. Rightne, secretary J. A. Avetin, treasurer to serve Bellows Valle. delegates to the national convention Labor Day in Ulinla Nebraska.
A major fire swept the SW Bedones Granite Co shed in Williamstown last night destroying the new stoneshed and furnace equipment. Insurance covers 17,000 of the 25,000 loss. defective wiring or possible incendiary origin under discussion as firefighters battled flames for hours. About 40 workers face unemployment as the site and machinery were reduced to ashes.
Residents glimpsed a northern glare thinking a fire broke out on the Montpelier road. The glow stemmed from a burning boxcar near the C V wreck at Dodge’s bridge. Wrecking crews burned debris to clear traffic while trains shifted routes. A separate fire at South Main bridge involved chip piles and a tenement at 308 North Main Street. Firefighters contained the blazes with chemicals and river water, causing only minor losses.
At the annual veterans dinner in the Congregational church vestry the Ladies of the G A R hosted over 100 attendees. Comrade E L Smith presided as speakers recalled reunions, the North and South, and the valor of volunteers. Cadet Captain Kimball spoke on service while others praised Memorial Day rites and the nation’s unity.
Mrs E Alice Averill of Averill Street died this morning at 4 o clock. Her death follows illness in Salem and she leaves a daughter Nellie Merrilty and several relatives. Funeral services will be held at the Methodist Church in Salem with interment at the cemetery.
Barre marks Memorial Day with Elmwood Cemetery ceremony and Opera House exercises. Veterans, civilians, students, and officials join in processions, parade by Norwich cadets, and public readings to honor those who served since 1776.
