Washington July 31 reports from the Belgian front south of that country indicate Belgian airmen are growing more active. Sub-Lieutenant Coppent and six sights were described in weekly dispatches received by the Belgian legation in Washington.
One hundred twenty cranemen at the Fore River and Squantum plants of Bethlehem Shipbuilding returned to work today after striking yesterday. The men are employed in shipyard construction projects under Bethlehem.
Windsor July 31 Frank Shaw a reformer at Vermont State Prison received a permit from Gov Graham to travel to Rutland to work at the reformatory as a free man under no ward supervision though still under prison jurisdiction He has been confined since 1901 after being sentenced to life for the murder of Sheriff Hoffman
British Foreign Secretary Arthur J. Balfour said in the House of Commons that no enemy government had approached the Entente for peace negotiations. Parliament was told that since March 21, British forces on the western front have taken 14,500 prisoners.
Five people were injured or killed when a Central Vermont train struck a six car automobile party near Riverton West Berlin. Percy Brown of Northfield Falls and Peter Gochie of Sheffield died. Mrs Brown and Mrs Gochie and two children were hospitalized in Montpelier with serious injuries. William Douglass, seven, had a fractured collar bone. Engineer Allard stopped the train after the crash. The accident followed bushes obscuring the crossing approach.
