At Victoria docks London on July 31 two thousand former strikers clashed with non union workers. Thirty were wounded by bullets and many injured as police struggled to contain the riot. Twelve officers faced the crowd but regained control by noon. Outbreaks occurred at other docks with numerous inquiries.
Moses Finnegan of North Pomfret, 35, was killed instantly when the horse he was leading kicked him in the chest near a wagon. Finnegan held the lead, the horse reared, and the animal struck him with its hoofs near the heart as he tried to restrain it. He leaves a wife.
The Stockholm Olympic team arrived in New York on the Vanderland steamer with bronzed athletes from all sports. The returning victors were warmly greeted at the wharf by cheering crowds and team members. The voyage was reported to have been splendid.

Boston July 31 grand jury reports secret indictments in the street car strike of the Boston Elevated Railway Company. Judge Taree received the indictment and reporters note a partial settlement while the jury plans to continue its investigation on August 1.
In Tokio on July 31 Yoshihito, former ruler of Japan, pledged to continue and extend the good work begun by the late emperor. He spoke before a vast gathering, expressing hopes for continued administration and admiration for the former ruler’s achievements. The proclamation offered a lengthy tribute to the dead emperor.
The New England Fat Men's era will meet at White River Junction during state sale week. A banquet is planned at Orbl Fellows hall on September 17 at 7 30 PM. Former Congressman from Ohio is expected to give an address. A Fat Men's tent will be at the state fair pounds.
New York July 31 sworn statements claim graft collected by high police officials from gambling houses and repute venues amounted to 2,400,000 annually, divided among four top officers including Police Lieutenant Becker. Ball Rose, graft collector for Becker, told District Attorney Whitman these findings and named others involved, with ongoing investigations into the murder of gambler Herman Rosenthal and potential leniency for Becker.
In Harlington, July, Carl Senna a 14 year old from Winowekt drowned while swimming with Hagton Ashenfelter after the pair entered the Winneske river at Red Rocks. Despite swift rescue attempts and search efforts, Senna's body was recovered eight feet below the surface later that day. The waterway is described as unusually dangerous to bathers in this section.
A Democratic county convention in Montpelier endorses Wilson and the statewide ticket. The gathering names temporary officers, appoints committees on credentials and resolutions, and nominates county officers with Senter and Bailey among the nominees. The body commends the national platform and endorses Democratic principles.
Republican Penn J. Greene of St Albans won the unexpired term in Congress in a special election with 470 votes. Democrat P. M. Melton and Socialist John Spargo trailed with 25 and 436 respectively, while Spargo's best showing came in his hometown and Greene carried every town in the district.
In a Montpelier convention speech, Vermont Democrats declare confidence in the Baltimore nominee and the Montpelier ticket led by Harland B. Howe. They endorse Democratic principles, pledge united support, and urge all citizens to aid in overturning the party of privilege. The adjournment was at 1 o'clock this afternoon.
Clement F. Smith master of the state grange campaigns as candidate of the Progressive Prohibition party. He plans an aggressive tour of farming districts statewide from now to election day, Morrisville July 31.
The Windham county Democrats met in Brattleboro and nominated a full ticket for state and county offices. Candidates include anti Rowell for senator, Dr C George for senator, Porter of Wilmington for sheriff, Davis of Grafton for sheriff, John Bo Gale of Guilford for probate judge, By Wolf of Bellows Falls for probate judge, A W P Carpenter of Brattleboro for state's attorney, W T Heywood for high bailiff, and Charles A Brown of Wilmington with JA Byrne of Bellows Falls as secretary of the convention.
Marki Magg of River street, an independent granite manufacturer, was seen at the Depot on Washington Street this morning with a steel piece removed from an eye. Dr. Conn noted the unbalanced state and police were called. Magg was taken to the station and later to Waterbury for observation.
A deadly house fire in Glens Falls, Fairlee, killed Mr and Mrs Verkine of Flushing and their daughter Ec, along with Miss Florence Albee of Springfield. They died at Mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, New Hampshire, after removal yesterday. Bernice Bean of Springfield reportedly fatally hurt, and Miss Alice Perkins survived with serious burns.
Barre Vermont city council debates widening Washington Street to not less than three rods amid health and sanitation complaints. Aldermen Patterson, Watt, Brown sign the majority report backing the plan while Mayor Thurston, Aldermen Dawson and Rosai oppose. Health concerns prompt discussion of sewer and water issues and motions to adjourn.
A forest fire on the north side of the Fast Barre road near Phelpa mill raged briefly before being contained by city forces. Fire chief Gladding directed crews from the central station aided by an American LaFrance truck, laborers, and road workers, with coordination from Prospect and Main Street. The fire threatened timber and a fence by Justi IL Clatetell, but diligent effort restricted damage to the hill crest and nearby property. the alarm brought volunteers and residents, and winds shifted to ease containment.
Sherman Giray, farmhand, charged with Naomi Mitchell murder, was arrested in Brooks last night. He denied identity at first but after questioning admitted being the suspect. He claimed to have left home after trouble and showed facial scratches. Deputy Sheriff Estes jailed him and Sheriff White notified Gaerne authorities.
