Reports suggest a major artillery clash may be forming on the Belgian front with substantial aerial activity. The latest tallies show 30 German aircraft down and 13 British machines missing, while infantry action remains limited on both the Belgian and French fronts.
London July 30 British cruiser Ariadne of 11 000 tons was torpedoed and sunk an Admiralty statement says The old vessel built in 1890s carried 677 officers and men at the time of loss
German crown prince troops attacked near Hurtebise farm on the Aisne front at dawn Saturday but were repulsed. French counteroffensive gained ground between Hurtebise and La Bouvelle, especially near Monument. In Champagne Tahure the enemy surprise attack was repulsed. The Vermont Chiropractic association held its annual meeting at the New Avenue hotel in St Johnsbury on Saturday with members from Vermont and Maine. A 3 PM business session was followed by an 8 PM banquet hosted by proprietor Paymer for doctors and their wives. Attendees included Dr. H W Gage and Dr. G B Gage of Barre and others from Portland Maine and St Johnsbury. Those from out of town returned home Sunday.
In Amite Louisiana on July 30 Dan Rout and Jerry Rout two Black brothers were taken from Tangipahoa parish jail by a mob and fatally harmed. The victims were accused of injuring Simeon Bennett a white man who had allegedly attempted to collect a debt. Bennett was struck and fatally hurt in March.
Washington July 30 Fully 24 000 physicians or two out of every nine of military age in the country will be needed by the new American armies in addition to 120 000 enlisted men for the medical corps Half of these physicians and enlisted men will be needed by October 1 They are entering training camps at Fort Riley Kane Fort Benjamin Harrison Des Moines and Allentown at the rate of 20 a day Three months training is given to officers and men About 13 500 officers and men are now under training There are about 90 000 physicians of military age in the country A system of selection will mobilize them from each community in proportion to availability so no community is left unprotected
London reports a British submarine intercepted and captured the German steamship Batavia in the North Sea after a brief chase. The German crew abandoned ship due to damage from gunfire, a British prize crew boarded, and the Batavia was sunk when the crew could not sail her into port. The vessel was listed as 1,320 tons.

Charles Passell, 21, private in Company H, 1st Infantry New Hampshire National Guard, drowned in the Mortimsc river above the mobilization camp. He was swimming with a friend when cramps struck and he sank. Companions recovered the body and pulmotors were used without success. Passell, a Keene resident, is the second drowning among soldiers since arrival at the camp.
An unfamiliar telegram from Bethel Maine reports the drowning of Antonia Priunte a 30 year old night telegraph operator at Grand Trunk station after he slipped off a ledge while hething in Somgo He is believed to have been with cramps His home Mitely Daneille P Q and he had brew there about a year. Chicago July 30 The strike of over 2500 switchmen from the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen ended about 6 am after an all night talk with 19 railroads. Workers will return immediately with preservation of seniority. Key points include meal periods yardmasters and hiring rules to be decided later by unions and managers.

Charles B Smith a 60 year old Macksmith and Odd Fellows member was found dead beneath his overturned automobile on the road to West Wilton about 2 pm. The emergency brake was set and the cause of the rollover is unknown. Medical Referee Moran of Nashua pronounced death an accident. He is survived by a wife a son in Boston and a daughter in Pittsburgh.
James Wilson of New Haven was fatally injured when struck by a motorist Mrs. C. H. Frary near Woodsville New Hampshire. He died after being taken to Woodsville Cottage Hospital. Wilson, about 40, married with a child, was seriously injured earlier and died at about midnight.
Bristol July 30 Hadley Wright sustained slight injuries Saturday when J W Trude's automobile truck driven by Rupert Trude slid down Mill hill brakes failed. Just before reaching the foot of the hill one wheel broke throwing Wright from the car. Mr Trude was badly bruised.
Burlington July 30 The First Vermont infantry was inspected Saturday afternoon by Governor Graham Adjutant General Tillotson Major Harvey Goodell and Colonel Thomas. The review of about 2000 men lasted an hour and a half with no other ceremonies. The general believes the guard will be drafted into the army and leave the post around August 5.
Frank C. Dunham of North Rennington was discharged Saturday from the First Vermont National Guard where he served as bandmaster. Later that day he took the oath as an assistant paymaster in the United States Navy and departed by evening train to report for duty in Washington, D. C.
A telegram to Brattleboro First Baptist from Rev. Clark T. Brownell of Newark New Jersey announced the wall extended him by the South church there on Friday night. The Brattleboro church planned to discuss his pastorate at an upcoming meeting.
At Bartington Queen City Park Spiritualist opened the 87th annual sessions yesterday morning with principal speaker A Bedberr. Seven year old Alonme Hubbart of Trea was noted among attendees and Dr Taster led the after proceedings.
Milton July 30. Lewis Lyons died yesterday from injuries after his team collided with another on River street and his horse ran away throwing him. He struck his face and broke five ribs and died about two hours later. AW Hammond, who was with him, jumped as the horse started to run and was injured. The funeral was held today from his late home.
