Reported in Chicago a race riot left more than a score dead and many wounded after continuous fighting through the night. Troops arrived to quell the disorder as clashes resumed into the morning.
Chicago riots surged through the south and downtown areas with gunfire injuring and killing many. Police reported 24 dead and numerous wounded as white and black mobs clashed, prompting Governor Lowden to mobilize 4000 troops while patrols and armored wagons patrolled the streets.
Four officers and three petty officers of the U S Navy were convicted by courts martial on charges connected with the enrollment promotion and assignment of reservists in the third naval district at New York The list includes Lieutenant Benjamin S Davis and reservists Avigne Paul Bock Oscar F Berger Robert H Spaho Chief Boatswain Lloyd C Casey Chief Boatswain's Mate Fredrick J Jones and Chief Yeoman Henry S Jacobs.
Washington reports updated prisoner totals from the war department showing 4180 Americans captured in France with 816 officers among them. The 28th division suffered 18 officers and 714 men, the 26th 0 officers and 435 men, and the 5th division one man captured. Early in the war, the 1st division had no officers and 192 men lost, while the 2d division had five officers and 152 men.
William Mo Jones, held by Coroner Mix as criminally responsible for the June 19 killing of 61 year old widow Mrs Esther Hopcroft in a barn on Dickerman Street, faces grand jury scrutiny. Evidence cites three barn keys among Jones and matches by burnt matches. Jones had access to a furnished room and resided as a roomer with Mrs Hopcroft and Mrs Ells.

Mellows Falls July 28 A farmer HF Webber shot a girl at the Webber farm and killed himself after dinner. Miss Mary Ryan tried to intervene but Webber turned the rifle on her and killed himself. The girl died at Rockingham hospital hours later. Neighbors described Webber as eccentric and prone to threats of self harm.
Col C H Tenney and Gen H T Lunde of Tenney Co Boston met Barre business leaders to discuss power needs. Oil burners added to Pioneer plant boost output, future steam unit possible with higher electricity charges. About 3,000 horsepower at Molly's Faire could be developed, costs high. no firm plan emerged beyond assurance of ample power for now.
A hearing at the State House reception room examined Montpelier & Barre Light & Power petition for 100000 ten percent bonds to cover 30 years. State representatives and company officials argued the funds would fund repairs already done rather than future ones.
A 10 30 p m crash near Wheelock street Montpelier injured three people including Louis Aron and Henry Merrin and left several shaken. Aron car driven by Robert Wark collided with Merrin car from Quincy Mass causing multiple bruises. Massachusetts occupants faced intoxication charges. local men also involved were Liedelman Parizo Hutchins and others.
Burlington July 20 The trial of Michael Arnezo for the alleged murder of his cousin Dominick Arazzo at Winooski began in Chittenden County court with a selected jury. Attorney General Archibald State's Attorney Allen Martin and defense by Rufus T Brown judge Jude Moultan. Arnezo pleads not guilty. Jury list includes Terrell Hanley McNeil Bing Graves Lint Duffy Reed Kasx Greene Lee Bixby Wakhlurn Multan. Trial expected to run through the week.
The alleged killer faced charges for the murder of Mrs. Lucina P. Broadwell in Barre during the night of May 3-4. Prosecutors say the suspect fired twelve cartridges, two of which struck the victim, as investigators described the weapon use and timeline.
George A. Long accused of murdering Mrs. Cucina P. Broadwell in Barre May 3 1919 planned jail escape in Montpelier. A loaded revolver cartridges a key and a pocket file were found in his cell with a diagram of the key. Long admitted only having the file in his pocket and will face the September term for first degree murder.
In West Roxbury a garage was robbed early today. The watchman James C. Crohan was asleep when abducted, shot fired to startle him, then carried to Lexington, about 18 miles away, as suspects loaded a large car with tires and other gear and fled.
