Allied forces push forward after German breakthrough attempts, driving the Crown Prince’s shattered army toward the Vesle River at the northern tip of the Marne salient. The pursuit follows heavy fighting as Germans flee a trapped pocket and retreat under pressure from coordinating Allied units.
Allied forces push beyond Fere en Tardenois as Germans retreat on a 20 mile front. French advance reaches north bank of the Ourcq while villages along the Vesle and near Rheims lines see heavy fighting. Sergy changes hands four times as allies press in the Fere area and push toward Ville-en-Tardenois with cautious but persistent gains.
Allied forces pressed north of the Ourcq in France as fighting intensified around Fere-en-Tardenois and Fere-en-Pepees. German resistance remained strong despite rapid Allied gains and street fighting in town centers, with progress slowing only near key positions on the southeast flank.
London reports two German trench lines on a two mile front along the Bray Corbie road east of Amiens have been captured. Allied troops say they took about one hundred prisoners in the operation conducted today, with reinforcements arriving to seal the advance.
Paris official war office statement says French forces gained ground north of the Marne on Sunday with captures reported. The overall situation remained unchanged overnight despite the action.

Rio Janeiro July 28 Italian steamer Giuseppe Garibaldi 400 on board was destroyed by an explosion 200 miles off the Brazilian coast. Six crew members were killed and the rest rescued by the English ship Ardgrange. Italian officials report the explosion was caused by a dynamite bomb likely placed by Germans. The Garibaldi formerly Cleveland Range was built in 1886, 340 feet long, 52 feet beam, owned by Italy.
Amsterdam reports a Hastov on the Don accord uniting the Don and Astrakhan districts in autonomy and mutual help for annexing strategically vital districts. Kiev papers say the treaty also foresees shared action against Bolshevik forces within their lands and the northern Caucasus, aiming to form a federal South Russia.
Allied forces press toward the Ardre as German defenses at Fore-en-Tardenoir fall. American and French troops push along the Ourcq and Aisne Marne line, with two Bavarian guard divisions reinforcing the foe. The German base at Fore-en-Tardenoir occupied. line extends toward Olizy et Vineuil.
Washington DC July 29 The crossing of the Ourcq by American forces in pursuit of the enemy north of the Marne was reported in General Pershing's communique for yesterday received at the war office. Captures include the towns of Sergines et Nesles Sergy and Roncheres beyond the Ourcq as troops press the pursuit with rear actions.
Amatentum July 20 A Czech deputy Stanek led a resolution in the Austrian lower house urging immediate self determination and opposing annexation. The measure, saying war is useless for humanity and political utility, faced rejection as inadmissible for vote. Stanek cited Czech unity and resolve against foreign rule.
London July 29 The death knell of the sombrero type of hat for American soldiers in England is issued in a general order from American headquarters. All officers and enlisted men on duty in England must stop wearing the service hat after August 1 and turn in such hats to the quarter master. The regulation headgear henceforth will be the overseas cap similar to that worn by other soldiers.
In South Philadelphia a black man was killed today amid ongoing race rioting that has left more than sixty injured over two days. Two prior fatalities included a police driver and a civilian, with security bolstered by 300 police and 60 marines.
Enosburg Falls area July 20 fire wipes out the mill complex of Nelson Hall & Co at Samsonville three and one-half miles north of town. The blaze, starting in the boiler room, consumed the box factory, mill, saw shop and three tenement houses with thousands of feet of lumber. About 100 workers were employed. investigators cited incendiary rumors though no statement was issued. A projected byetam boilermaker upgrade valued at $10,000 would have been ready in days. The main building, 100 by 180 feet, had been built about two years ago with several additions since. The firm expects to resume work.
Washington reports seventy five thousand armed elements are marching on Kiev the capital of Ukraine per Stockholm dispatches. The unrest in the Ukraine and nearby regions is described as very serious with peace delegates unable to reach settlement details. Moscow allegedly expelled relatives of those implicated in Count von Mirbach’s murder.
July 20 report notes the convoy system, in place about a year, reduced losses to one out of nearly 200 ships. The admiralty highlights efficiency with only 50 percent of ships lost relative to those convoyed.
Washington reports eight steel ships with a deadweight of 45,800 tons delivered by American shipyards last week. Launchings totaled ten steel vessels at 53,250 tons and five wooden ships at 19,200 tons. In London, Roosevelt met King George V in a long interview today.
A hot Saturday at Caledonian Park hosted the Clan Gordon picnic with hundreds attending to support war work. The event featured piping, dancing, field sports, and midway attractions, including a Kaiser Bill effigy and various competitions. Washington July 29 Frank J Godsol a French citizen held on charges of the French government that he made millions in motor truck contracts was discharged on habeas corpus by Justice Gould. The bond was set at 60 000 in Liberty bonds. The court found the complaint defective and the proofs contradicted the allegations. Several thousand workers returned to General Electric contracts in Lynn Massachusetts after two weeks on strike. Pickets urged a turnout and clashes erupted. police used shields and one man was hospitalized. A mediator’s failure to resolve the dispute prompted a strike committee in Washington to seek board intercession. Workers reassured by the company that rehire would be without prejudice.
International Paper mill workers resume work after a unanimous 730 to 0 vote by employers following word from New York that the interpretation dispute of a federal war labor board award has been settled.
Coventry and Birmingham reports indicate munition plant strikers plan to resume work after yesterday’s actions. The move follows a posted appeal and suggests a calming effect on other regions facing potential walkouts as the embargo on labor pressures eases.
C D Waters passenger agent of Montpelier and Wells River leaves town for Boston to discuss a possible Boston and Maine system position. Talks focus on improving evening mail and passenger service into Barre and Montpelier, with Montpelier and Wells River trains meeting Central Vermont at Montpelier. If agreed, a Boston departure at 6 16 could offer Barre riders a later Montpelier connection.
