British forces gained control of Delville Wood after the Brandenberg Regiment was driven from fortifications amid the heaviest shell fire, according to calculations cited in London.

Washington July 23 reports from the official weather center describe a Bermuda high dominating the country’s weather. A strong Atlantic high off Bermuda has surged inland toward the Rocky Mountains, funneling heat and tropical moisture northward. Forecaster Frankenfield says the heat wave is just beginning and will likely persist through the week with no indications of a break.

A fire in New York last night destroyed a large frame warehouse of the Uneeda Storage and Van company extending from 1oth to 1let streets on Amsterdam Avenue. The loss was estimated at 81,000,000. Three firemen were seriously injured when a clock tower fell, burying men beneath burning timbers while they were removing a ladder.

A telegraph from Eagin Pass Texas reported the death of Harold M. Mowe of Co F First Vermont Regiment. He died after a fan explosion during a training incident at the Wee pottring ken lene. He leaves a widowed mother and two sisters in Northfield. Burial plans were announced locally by his family.
