The central powers Romania peace treaty ceded Bessarabia to Romania in exchange for Dobrudja and other territory. Most inhabitants are Romanian. Ukraine borders Bessarabia to the north and east.
Paris July 26 The Germans reinforce the right flank of the Soissons Rheims pocket with a new army commanded by General Von Eben. The forces are placed between the armies of General Von Hutier and General Von Boehm.
Chicago July 24. The LW W trial defense placed W Fall on the stand in Chicago. Otto Jacobs, vice-president of the timber workers inatcher, testified the Washington strike on July 16 sought better employment terms. He said Gompers approved efforts to improve working conditions and avoid class one status. Jacobs is married with two children.
On the Aisne Marne front, American troops push through the forested sectors east of Chateau Thierry. German infantry withdraws in rear guard actions as Allies concentrate heavy artillery to breach the woods south of Fere and Ris. Peasants, well armed, reportedly advanced toward Kiev with German detachments retreating.
St Johnsbury July 26 Corporal Walter Jordan of the tied machine gun battalion is reported killed in action on July 14. He captured a machine gun from the enemy and returned it to American trenches. A telegram from the War Department was received by his former employer John A. Gagnon of Danville. Jordan, 40, served in Go D of St Johnsbury and went to Fort Ethan Allen Camp Devens and saw action last fall. His only relatives live in England. He came to Canada at 13, then Danville as a farm hand.
Railroad men in Montpelier announce no consolidation of Central Vermont and Montpelier and Wells River services for Barre and Montpelier until residents can be heard. Freight offices will switch to cash basis on August 1.
Washington July 24 satisfactory progress is reported by American and British troops pushing German lines in the Soissons Rheims salient. Secretary Baker and General Marek said transportation of the expeditionary army meets the strain as troops move heavy guns and ammunition. Death rate in battle is eight per thousand with an equal rate from disease. officials call this the lowest death rate in modern warfare. Generals could not provide German killed figures.
The War Industries Board fixed New England spruce lumber prices for government and allied buyers from July 19 to August 1, 2018. Rates range from 38 to 60 dollars per thousand feet depending on size, length and finish for rail or water shipments.
