Field Marshal Haig reports complete capture of Pozieres giving British guns control of dominating heights overlooking the plateau. The breakthrough comes as German lines collapse under artillery and infantry pressure, enabling British and Australian forces to gain a strategic position.
Washington announces a preliminary plan under the Shackleford-Hankhead law to spend 150 million dollars jointly with states on roads. Burlington July 26 A Burlington Essex Junction laundry driver Fred Rushford lost a leg and a shoulder after a westbound local train from Winooski struck the wagon near Fort Ethan Allen. Passenger William Siegrist, 14, of Essex, was killed. Rushford was taken to Fletcher Allen Hospital after the crash.

The commission directs construction of standard transportation rates and rejects using leased cars to boost dairy shipments from Vermont and New Hampshire to Boston.
Washington July 26 The Boston and Maine railroad was today authorized by the Interstate Commerce Commission to continue steamship lines on Lake Winnipesaukee New Hampshire and Lake Memphremagog Vermont despite the prohibition against railroad owned steamship lines.
