A new Croatian republic is proclaimed after violent clashes, as the region breaks from Serbia. Croatian forces fraternize with Hungarian troops while Serbians reportedly try to suppress ongoing disorders.
Dispatches from Agram report Croatian troops declare an independent republic as Slovenian and Croatian soldiers call for separation from Serbia. Large revolts occur near Gratz and Marburg with many killed or wounded, railways and telegraphs disrupted from Cacak to the south. Serbian troops move to quell unrest as the Croatian republic is reportedly supported by soldiers in several towns. Paris dispatches note ongoing disorder.
Paris July 25. Rumania and Serbia seen to receive the major share of more than a billion francs indemnity demanded under Bulgarian peace terms, nearly finished per Excelsior. The remainder would go to Greece, the paper says.
Hartford July 25 Governor Holcomb who has suffered from gout for a few days returned to his Southington home by automobile. He had been at Dr Ingalls home for two days and both he and the doctor used crutches. It would take two to six days before he could move unaided. It is not expected he will be at the Capitol for several days.
London reports the coal strike involving about 250000 miners is settled today with demobilization planned by mid October. Paris notes French army reserves including 1917 conscripts to demobilize by mid October as government plans reduce service.
Paris reports from American Relief Administration officers describe 20000 Russian troops, many barefoot and poorly armed, defending a front from the Finnish coast to Petrograd against a larger Bolshevik force. Despite improved rations and medical supplies, morale in Bolshevik ranks remains poor while allied coordination slows relief efforts toward Petrograd before winter.
Mineola New York July 25 Lieutenant Colonel R. S. Harte and a four man crew left Mineola at 8 25 am on the second leg of a 13000 mile flight around the nation in a Martin bomber. The ship developed a tank leak but was repaired at 5000 feet over Baltimore. The third leg is from Augusta to Cleveland about 60 miles with Portland, Maine in passing.
Washington July 28 Republicans plan to set aside the U S Colombia peace treaty for immediate consideration of a separate accord. Lodge says Colombia would be paid 25 million dollars for damages from American Panama Canal acquisition, with Senate ratification sought next week and talks to drop a regret clause.
New York July 25 Raymond B Stevens vice president of the United States Shipping Board met with seamen and operators to finalize a compromise on the marine work stoppage. Both sides reported acceptance of a preferential arrangement for American seamen and union men and a plan to supply volunteer crews for the fleet bound for the French government. Four ships will be manned as talks proceed, with three vessels from a Virginia yard and three more slated to sail from Newport News.
Boston reports the Massachusetts minimum wage commission established a $12.50 weekly minimum for women in candy factories. The figure, claimed as the highest wage in the state, covers self support, health, and living costs with a detailed budget including board, lodging, clothing, recreation, self-improvement, laundry, transportation, church, and savings items.
Sixty Germans from Coblens Berlin and other cities were arrested by army intelligence in Germany over a scheme to defraud the government of millions by controlling auction bids for salvaged army material. The organization allegedly blocked competition, with sales sometimes reaching fifteen to twenty million marks, and members paid off or sabotaged bidders.

Mount Clemens Michigan July 2 Bishop Charles D Wilkes Detroit Episcopal minister testified for Henry Ford in his libel suit against the Chicago Daily Tribune. He refuted Professor Reeves University of Michigan who testified Ford ideas were anarchistic.

Observers note a world view shift treating Austria as a major state despite losing five sixths of its territory and dropping from a vast empire to about one million people, facing a harsh winter with famine and cold risk.
New York July 26 The War Department under Colonel Arthur Woorks reports Clayton Bowen Hope of Willimantic Conn a private recently discharged has vanished The department is making every effort to locate him Hope served with the Fifth Battalion in France and was honorably discharged at Camp Upton May 1 He told his mother he would be home in days but nothing further is known by his family
Dayton July 25 Captain Roy N Francis left McCookfield at 8 04 this morning in a Martin bomber for New York where in a few days he will start a trans continental trip to Seattle Washington Captain Prayeis expected to fly to Mineola after Dayton with one stop on the trans continental flight at North Platte Nebraska Accompanying him in the Martin bomber are Lieutenant Welch Lieutenant F Cerruti and Sergeant S Madan
On July 25 Mira George MacAlister of West Newbury fell from a load of hay near South Ryegate. She sustained fractures in one foot, but the swelling hindered initial assessment. Dr. Darling attended the scene though the extent of the fracture could not be determined immediately.
Washington July 25 deliveries of 21 ships to the shipping cord during the week ending July 18 contributed to the United States war effort. Total lines and tank capacity figures are cited, though figures appear garbled.
TL. W. Brooks of Bethel was painting the Washington ent ty use in Montpelier when he fell 30 feet to a cement veranda. He landed on his feet, then toppled, breaking both ankles and fracturing a leg in another location plus other injuries. He was taken to Heaton hospital for treatment.
Boston and northeastern counties were quarantined to stop shipment or sale of corn as European corn borer infestation threatens multiple districts. Commissioner Wilfred Wheeler urged farmers and gardeners in affected areas to burn infested ears and destroy ears, cobs, and refuse.
Suzana Eastman 25 died in City Hospital after an abdominal abscess operation. Born in Corinth daughter of Brad and Jane Eastman she lived with H M Dovbry of Williamstown seven years and worked at Granite and in Hartford. Surviving: parents three brothers Mark in Vershire Leon and David of Corinth and several half siblings. Member of Reborials of Williamstown and Universalist Church.
Voutstick July 25 reports prod Fisher fell from the foot of his houst in the village yesterday and died at once. A Civil War veteran and Randall pat member, he leaves four daughters Mrs Otis Ludlow Mrs Ricker Worcester Mrs Walte Gardner and Mrs Thorburn North Bridgewater, a brother George and two sisters.
South Ryegate July 25 John A MacAlltater merchant in the village died at Cottage hospital Woodsville NH after a long illness. The funeral will be held at the Presbyterian church Sunday at 2 PM. He was the son of John D and Lydia MacAlltater and about 82 years old.
In Washington, Senator Pittman of Nevada warns that any reservation in ratifying the peace treaty could reopen negotiations, invite new reservations, and renew international dissension. He cites historic Spain and warns that wording differences and interpretive changes alter the contract and obligations.
Waterbury July 2 Lightning struck the Loomis hill farm seven miles from the village during a storm yesterday afternoon wiping out the entire complex of buildings. Cattle and horses were present when the blaze started. volunteers saved most of the stock and householders Mr Ayers and family plan to set up in a nearby building and continue.
The funeral of Mrs Jane Trail, found dead beside the Williametown railroad last Tuesday from heart failure, was conducted yesterday afternoon at the Church of the Good Shepherd by Rev. I C Muntington. Attendees from the city included Alexander Watson, Charles Booth, Wil Wat Emelie, and George Patterson. The hearse was followed by many flowers from Trinidad and relatives. Burial took place at Elmwood Cemetery. Mrs G O Madgd on of Zanesville, daughter of the deceased, and Miss Vera Kimslie of Zanesville, OL, attended the service.
Chief Donahoe of Northfield arrested Arthur Allard in Hartford on a civil tort action brought by John Kelly of Barre. Allard, employed as a polleeeter, left Kelly's service about two years ago. The arrest followed a plan to trap Allard in Lebanos, New Hampshire, as he traveled toward White River Junction. Allard appeared to resist and was jailed after failing to show the needed document.
The White House today clarified that the president does not currently intend to present the treaty before returning from a nationwide tour. Officials said the schedule shifts reflect ongoing consultations and travel commitments across states.
