Allied forces push south of Soissons and near Rheims as German defenses stiffen. French and American troops reach the western bank of the Crise River south of Soissons, with crossing expected to threaten the town’s fall.
AP reports French and American forces push near Soissons and Rheims while Germans rush reserves to stabilize the salient. French re ports note heavy artillery and repulsed counter attacks around Vrigny. rain slows fighting between Soissons and Rheims and may hinder German retreat toward the Vesle.
Paris reports German counter attack west of Rheims in the Wrigny area repulsed by French forces. Artillery was active along the Aisne and Marne fronts, with no further notable events across the line.
The French, British and American forces continue hammering the crown prince’s flanks on the Aisne Marne front. German reinforcements are reported at some positions but the allied line is said to be in more favorable posture. Better weather enabled extensive aircraft observation and heightened artillery activity.

Lieutenant Warren T. Hobbs of Worcester Massachusetts a member of the Lafayette Flying Squadron is officially reported missing since July 17 following an air battle with the American army in France. Earlier dispatches from field headquarters stated Hobbs was killed June 20 when his aircraft was brought down by anti aircraft fire after engine trouble.
Lost July 24 Sergeant Louis Losti Pidadelpha, one of the thirteen Lafayettin escadrille members, was missing on duty and may be a prisoner in Germany. Details appear in the Paris edition Byers of Wie.
Tandon, July 24. British troops carried out raids last on in the south of Bucquoy and northwest of Albert, according to today’s war office report. A few lines were reported of an alderman raid on the British lines northeast of Flanders front that was repaired.
Reports from Moscow and Amsterdam indicate widespread fraud in army supply contracts for shoes shirts leggings overcoats and other soldier gear. General mobilization of the Russian army began on July 7 according to Moscow advices received.
New York reports the torpedoed Justicia resuming voyage to America after delivering a large contingent of American troops. The troop carrying ship carried about 6,000 to 7,000 men with a crew of roughly 50. An Associated Press dispatch from an Irish port notes hundreds of the crew aboard.
In a naval attack, three torpedoes struck the vessel causing engine room damage. The ship halted after the first hit, with passengers intact and most of the crew unharmed. Some damage reported but casualties appear limited to a few. Further details awaited.
Portland report confirms all 23 crew members of the Gloucester fishing schooner Robert and Richard were accounted for. Three landed at Kennebunkport, 21 at last night’s port, four more brought in today, and four were picked up at sea then taken to Boston.
July 24 reports from Boston say Malcolm Cotton Brown of Chicago was killed in England while a fleet coastal patrol pressed efforts to locate a submarine off the New England coast. The group boards at Wells River, with 14 named draftees listed and replacements noted for those rejected. Other counties report figures Caledonian 6 Exnex 42, Orleans 16, Rutland 120, Windham 33.
Governor H F Graham announced from the war department that 1,000 Vermont men will be drafted in August, similar to July. Local boards were told to deny releases allowing draftees to join the navy marines or emergency fleet corporation, with notices sent to boards.
A massive hangar at the Caval base in Norfolk Virginia caught fire shortly after noon today. The blaze threatened the structure as outside help was summoned from Norfolk to fight the flames.
Boston July 24 The heat wave over New England eased today as an east wind and scattered showers moved in. Temperatures fell to 74 in the city at noon but many people still suffered heat prostrations and several deaths were reported during the prolonged spell.
