French forces push steadily along the Somme front taking trenches in the Hardecourt sector. Front line trenches from Barleux to Sagetourt fall into French hands as gains continue on the northern front.
French forces attacked the Somme region on both river banks taking trenches in Mardecourt north and north of Barleux to Soyecourt. Verdun area saw bombardment around Avecourt Chattancourt with actions near hill No. 3. On Meuse east bank progress near Thiaumont works and south of Pleury, a fortified German post yielded 150 prisoners while a German aircraft was shot down near Peronne.
London report says heavy fighting continues on the Somme with British gains in Delville Wood and Longueval. North of Longueval, British forces extend their line while bombing parties at the Leipzig redoubt make substantial progress during the night.
London reports from Rome that Petrograd sources describe a great battle developing at Jalonitza with favorable Russian results so far. Heavy fighting continues in the Carpathians as the Russian offensive resumes near Kovel Vladimir Volynski and in the Riga area. Jalonitza lies in the Carpathians south of Kolomes near a northern mountain pass toward Hungary.
An official Vienna statement reports Austrians repulsed three strong Italian assaults on Barcola, as stones were hurled down the mountainside in the battle zone.

Ashville North Carolina July 2 The flood toll in the southeastern states has risen to 73 as communication restored. Nine persons remain missing. Most deaths occurred in western North Carolina.
A New York jury set aside Amos E. Eno's will, awarding Columbia University about 4 million dollars as residuary estate. The verdict did not affect gifts totaling 250000 to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, and the Society for Improving the Condition of the Poor, nor 25000 to the New York Public Library, which were protected by stipulation.
Captain Paul Koenig, commander of the German merchant submarine Deutschland, donned his uniform in Baltimore today for the first time since landing 11 days ago and indicated he would not leave the ship again though he offered no timing. The Deutschland remains submerged at about the same depth despite a screen of tugboats.

In Middlebury on July 20 Mrs John Whitman and her five year old daughter were struck while crossing the highway by an auto driven by Oy Wilmarth of Addison. Mrs Whitman was taken from beneath the car and lay unconscious about ten minutes. The child crawled away frightened but unhurt. They were rushed to Dr R W Prentiss and later sent home. Mrs Whitman is seriously hurt. the girl was bruised.
Rutland officers report two recent elopements ending in arrests. Perley Rice, 19, was held in 1000 bail on a statutory charge involving Alva L LaVoice, 14, after they left Monday night. LaVoice returned home at 11 pm and Rice was jailed awaiting grand jury. A 13-year-old and 25-year-old couple were located. the man faced kidnapping charges and was jailed in default of 1500.
The Montpelier Argus reports a remarkable donation to Heaton hospital. Mr Calef’s gifts now total 41,000, including bonds and coupons, with a formal letter from Washington Vermont dated May 17 1914 expressing support to aid sickness and suffering and a permanent Coleman fund.
The People's Lighting Heating & Power Co filed to rename to Barre Gas Co before the Vermont public service commission. It seeks mortgage power to $250,000 and to raise capital stock by 850.01 percent to form a new cumulative block. Hearing showed directors voted to mortgage upon commission approval. Financial data showed 1904 setup with $100,100 capital, $75,000 mortgage, $50,008 owed to directors. officers unpaid except treasurer. If approved, planned herd sale proceeds and bond settlements would fund plant extensions in Barre and other extensions.
