Gen Petain’s troops counterattacked near St Quentin after German attempts to regain lost ground. German efforts to recover territory on the northern front were halted as French and Allied forces held key positions despite fire. A Russian destroyer reportedly sank a German submarine in the Baltic.
A Petrograd letter from General Brusiloffs chief of staff claims Nikolai Lenine is an agent of the German general staff. Evidence cited includes a confession by Lieutenant Krmolenkostating he was sent to the front to promote peace with Germany.
Paris reports a French official statement noting lively artillery along Cerny Hurteise and Craonne. The morning repulsed a German assault west of the Corny sugar refinery. Cosgrave was chosen as candidate after Keane chaired a meeting. Cosgrave had been imprisoned and pardoned, with prior rebellion and death sentence histories noted.
London reports fourteen British ships over 1100 tons sunk by submarine in the past week. Four vessels under 1600 tons were also lost and eight fishing vessels were sunk. The admiralty notes arrivals and sailings totals and lists losses by tonnage and type.

In Manchester New Hampshire a hay wagon driven by Napoleon Larouche and his son was rear ended by a motorcycle carrying Joseph Groleau and Romeo Provencher near the state boulevard. The impact threw the hay rider from the wagon onto the road and both cyclists were seriously hurt. They were rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital in critical condition.
Nine year old Jack O Neil son of John O Neill of Exeter Methodist temperance group was knocked down while crossing near the Casino. His head was crushed and he sustained internal injuries. He was rushed to Easter hospital. driver not held as accident deemed unavoidable.
Washington officials plan to admit Porto Ricans to the United States for railroad construction. Railroads were asked by the Department of Labor and the railroad department to approve workers for eng tower of wiring and telegraphy.

In Caledonia county court the case of Stanley F. Turfield versus Passumpsie Telephone Co was settled yesterday after a drawn jury. Garfield sued for 10000 for injuries from employment, settled with him and Clayton Stone for 4500 each. Stone, injured in the same incident, had earlier won 8000 in a prior ruling, then the supreme court remanded for a new trial. The companion Stone suit concluded at 4500, with an appeal planned before a final 4500 payment. The court recessed at Willoughby Lake and will resume with remaining cases, aiming to close the term by Saturday.

George C. Tompkins of Philadelphia admitted participating in the shooting deaths of Edmund J. Humphries, his wife, and their 15 year old son on a country road near Johnstown. He testified the killings followed a tire repair during an early morning drive, with three masked gunmen ordering the victims from the car before firing. The confession, given to the coroner's jury in the presence of the jailer and his lawyers, described moving the bodies and seeking medical help at Dr. E. P. Aihle's in Carrolltown.
President Wilson issued pardons for 16 suffragists serving 60 days in the workhouse for picketing in front of the White House. Secretary Tumulty said the pardon must speak for itself and that the White House would provide a statement explaining the action.
Frank Francis of North Bend street nearly drowned after sinking twice in 15 feet of water at Queen City park bay. R T Shattuck, former lifeguard and New Sherwood chef, dived and pulled him to the surface while a crowd and boats responded. Francis revived with artificial respiration and dressed to go home.

Mrs Elise Hedburn Mitchell longtime Harte resident died at Waterbury State Hospital after years of ill health. Body brought to Barre for funeral at 2 at St Emrenst, with Rev Hooker officiating, Hope Cemetery beside her late husband. Born Aberdeens Scotland, she lived in Barre for 22 years. Surviving relatives listed.
