The British gained substantial progress along a 1K yard front north of Ovillers despite thick mist and constant rain. The war office says several strongly defended German positions were driven out, while La Maisonette battles incurred heavy losses for the Germans as attempts to take the fort failed.
Paris reports that German forces attacked south of the Somme and made ground near Binches while several attempts to seize La Maisonette failed. Fighting stretched along the eastern flank near Riches as war continues. In Adame Massachusetts two young sisters Yvonne Clairmont aged 9 and Bertha aged 6 were badly burned when kerosene spilled while pouring oil on a fire. They fled to their grandmother’s nearby home where their father tried to smother the flames with his coat. Doctors say they may not live 24 hours.
London reports the British government will publish a list of 70 to 100 U S firms and individuals in the United States forbidden for British residents to trade with. This marks the first time American firms are on the statutory blacklist under the Trading With the Enemy Act. Other nations have long appeared on the list.

In Whitehall New York July 18 Ingle Redd about 35 employed by Delaware and Hudson as number taker and yardmaster assistant was struck and instantly killed by passenger train No 11 northbound at 11 yesterday morning. He had just thrown the switch to admit the passenger train and stood waiting for a light engine to pass when he was struck.

Brandon July 18 report: Haggarty, a South Reaton resident employed on Sherwin French’s farm, was arrested by Officer Sisco on suspicion of stealing a diamond ring and $6 from French’s house. The ring belonged to French’s sister and money was in a chafing dish. Haggarty denied the theft and was released after nothing incriminating was found.
Ernest Thompson Seton, the noted naturalist, visiting Theodore N. Wall at Speedwell, Lyndon, spoke to the Boys and Girls Project about woodcraft this afternoon. Children wore Indian dress as they gathered around a camp fire lighted by Mr. Seton rubbing sticks together.
Peter Sumer aged 39 dropped dead at his Bank street home in Lebanon July 18. He had lived here 15 years and was in his usual health prior to death. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the home of Peter Fredette on Kimball street.
Burlington reports an alumni committee began an inquiry into disloyalty accusations against Prof Anton H Appelmann German chair at the University of Vermont. Hobart Bliss aged 75, longtime Lebanon resident and Civil War veteran, died by his own hand at his Poverty Lane home yesterday morning. He had been ill for months. Survived by wife and three children, Mrs. Charles C Smith, Arthur Bliss, and Dr. George F B Bliss of the West. He was a member of G A R and James B Perry Post, Vermont Company A, Sixth Regiment.

Miss Josephine Gelli of River Street leaves for Quimbs Massachusetts to visit Seat Jotn Celli, hotel clerk. Miss Harriet Houston returns home on Maple Avenue after visiting friends Moston fit five on at forty weeks. Miss Houston previously worked for Consolidated Lighting Co. until July 1. Miss Heustern will become Secretary to Carroll HM. White, school superintendent, at the start of the new school year.

In Halifex yesterday Judge Frank E. Barker found Trot Pinner and Bratti¢hore guilty of catching undersized trout. Each received a 40 dollar fine after the incident involved cooking a meal with fish from Wardee EM and others present observed the violations.
