In Birmingham Alabama on July 18 Governor Comer ordered militia to readiness after reports of an Adamaville clash. A deputy sheriff is said killed and several deputies wounded with many strike sympathizers arrested. Major Ledbetter leads troops en route to Adamaville.
The Glidden and Hower trophy contenders arrived in Boston after a ten hour run from Albany covering 144 miles. One woman driver caused a crash that eliminated the Rochester team, leaving four outfits with perfect scores for the Glidden cup and five cars still flawless in the Hower Trophy event.

Randolph July 18. Three men aged about 18 fled a burglary from Roxbury to South Royalton after stealing a watch, purse, pipe and tobacco. Officer Putnam and engineer Sawyer pursued along Main Street and Blue Barn pond portage. All three pleaded guilty and were sent to the house of correction for three months.
A party of about 20 marble workers from Ruthland will leave Ruthind Monday morning for Marble Colorado to join the Colorado Yule Marble company. T Ry Salter at 41 Cleveland avenue will head the group, which boards the Delaware Hudson line at 72:80 o clock. They are to fill roles as cutters splishers and bed rubbers and may be kept busy three to four years. Colorado officials report contracts on hand and expect a shipment to Vermont in two months. Salter will oversee the Colorado Yule office.
A July fire at Canobie Lake in Lawrener Massachusetts destroyed Dow's frame building and surrounding trees. Fire spread to a grove, with estimated forest damage far exceeding the $15,000 structure loss. Aid arrived from local crews before containment.

Burlington July 15 William Bryan the presidential candidate will visit Martington this summer to deliver an address in support of his campaign. Mayor James E Burke says no definite speaking arrangements have been made yet but Bryan may speak at Barlingham Gate with details to be announced.
Suadah Temple No. 10 announces a caravan on Friday July 24 to travel from Zem’s cooling springs in Khor to Barre. Officials of the temple and supreme officers will be present to assist in the ceremonies. The list includes M. Willey and J. Roberte among others, with officers and electri cians named.
Cleveland July 15 Theo F Burton a Cleveland congressman still contends for the United States Senate to succeed Joseph Benson Foraker but declines active campaign efforts. He departs for Europe saying his priority is Taft’s victory and avoiding Republican strife in Ohio and Cuyahoga County. The office should seek the man, not force the race.
President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor denied last night that he sent a cable to William Randolph Hearst urging him to influence the Independence League to back Bryan or to support Bryan directly. He said he did not send any message to Hearst and did not know who authored the cited communication.
Boston Massachusetts July 18 two investigations have begun to determine the nature of the explosives that killed three men and seriously injured several at the Hamburg American Line pier Mystic Wharf. Authorities including State Police Deputy George Neal and Collector Lymathie are examining the scene and questioning shore workers and railroad and steamship company officials regarding the two cases shipment and receipt.
The Erie M C A relay team from New York to Chicago reached Ashtabula at 6 24 am and the local team took the lead toward Painesville seventy miles away The runners remain about nine hours ahead of the schedule after heavy road conditions yesterday and expect to reach Cleveland around noon
H Smith of Dathy claimed damages to his crops from deer. Several neighbors in the vicinity are understood to be seeking similar damages. County Warden ML HL Stickney is cited in the complaint filed at the county office.
Central Labor Union met to decide Barre and Montpelier Barre Town unions should unite for a Labor Day event at Intercity Park. A permanent committee will arrange sports and exercises including a speech, baseball game, tug of war, foot races, hammer throw, with Montpelier Military Band likely providing music. Coaches aim for a successful first joint celebration in years.

George Hedges of Barre town was found roaming in the rain by Officer Gamble and jailed for intoxication. He admitted a prior court conviction under the alias George Smith from three years ago, pleaded guilty to a second offense, and paid a $15 fine plus $6.15 in costs.
Vergennes July 18 The first gun of the Republican campaign in this state will be fired tonight at New Ire when Congressman Foster will be citizens. The exercises will be under the auspices of the Foxto club. A new Taft and Sherman tag will be raised. The Vergennes City band will furnish music.
This afternoon in Barre, the Barre team hosts Montpolier at Intercity Park for a baseball game. Also scheduled are a Masonic picnic at Caledonia Park and a Craignall Club picnic, with Benjamin's Fails noted in event listings.
