Official dispatches from Petrograd report a frontline of intense action from the Gulf of Riga to Romania with forces in motion. German troops are said to be shifting units from Italian and French fronts while Austrians in the Carpathians are described as in full might.
Paris says German offensives between the Somme and the Aisne were repulsed except near Mont Haut in Champagne where they held some trench elements. French forces captured a German trench network north of Mont Haut and northwest of Yeton after strong artillery preparation and night fighting.
London reports the British and enemy artillery active near Armentieres Wytehaete and Nieuport. Allied air raids struck four railway stations behind lines and a German rest camp. Despite storms, bombers hit Damube airfields and a large ammunition dump. cooperation with artillery helped drive off and destroy German aircraft while several were forced down or out of control.
In Durich on July 16 a chaotic session erupted as former Czech minister Herr Praschek accused allies of meddling in Russia and Finland while asserting Austria should align with Germany. The semi official newspaper Viemaa reported on the rift amid international tension and calls for strategic detachment from Petrograd.

Rome July 16 The Italian war mission headed by the Prince of Udine returned from the United States and urged Premier Bowell and other ministers to approve Alfredo Cocchi extradition. They argue the move would bolster Italy's standing in America and align with Italian law in spirit.
Madrid reports claim both sides in the controversy are confident in the soldiers' action. Barcelona papers say a parliamentary assembly in Catalonia will meet Thursday despite denials, with organizers asserting army support while defense committees protest. The army is expected to stay aloof and obey the government.

Johnstown Pennsylvania July 14 a coal operator Eadward Humphries his wife and son Edward Humphries Jr were shot to death on a main road while traveling with George Tompkins Jr of Philadelphia Three masked men allegedly stepped from a grain field and fired at them Tompkins claimed the party was robbed and the coroner ordered Tompkins held for investigation The Humphries and Tompkins had ties to a road company formed weeks earlier at Carrolltown
Kristianiaffjord carrying 1200 from an American port via Halifax to Norway ran ashore seven miles west of Cape Race Newfoundland in heavy rain and fog. All passengers were landed safely at Portugal Cove as rescuers, ships, and the Canarian steamship Stan ley aided. Crew aided by fishermen began unloading cargo. high tide may refloat. Vessel damaged but not hopelessly. voyage to Halifax for cargo and passenger examination. Among passengers was Heinrich Schaaffhausen, envoy for Count Von Bernstorf, deported to Norway, plus a German family bound for Norway.
George C Underhill a noted marble promoter of Rutland died at his home on Saturday after an operation for left leg amputation following diabetes. Born in Dorset he helped found the Rutland Florence Marble plant at Fowler and led the Columbian Marble company. He traveled widely for marble research and was active in politics, leaving a wife, a son Robert S Underhill, and three daughters Jennie, Gwendolyn, and Meta, plus a stepson George L Preston.
A severe electrical storm in Panton on Saturday afternoon struck the Hartwell residence, tearing the chimney apart and pulling plaster from walls. The bolt also shattered telephone wires, splintering a china closet and shelves while Mrs Hartwell and two children were indoors. Mrs Miller, nearby, felt no harm. The Hartwell men were in the barn at the time.
In St Johnsbury on July 1 a housekeeper May Hicks confesses to John Bradshaw about the murder of his child. Authorities note the grave was uncovered by men but no body is found. Rumors persist the child may be alive while investigators search for the missing remains or another hiding place.
London reports from German sources claim four of the largest modern German submarines were destroyed by American forces while convoying the first installment of American troops to France. The Berne dispatch to the Rome news agency relays the claim.
The Grace, an American steamer owned by Standard Commercial Steamship of New York, was sunk by a submarine torpedo off the coast. Three men were killed, including an American, and two armed guard members were wounded. Five others were injured by petroleum explosions. Survivors have been landed and the injured sent to a hospital.
Frederick W. Blanchard 53, plasterer of South Portland, died of chest injuries after a motor truck left the Stroudwater bridge and plunged 26 feet into the water. His son Harry 26, was critically hurt with crushed hips and broken legs. Willis 10 injured, Langhorne 6 escaped unharmed. The 10-year-old drove the car before skid, passersby aided survivors.
Caledonian Real Estate Company Inc of St Johnsbury filed articles of incorporation with capital stock of 85. Incorporators are I Matson W Scott and P S Hamilton of Johnsbury. Dairy Trucking Corporation of Manchester filed to operate trucking and dairy handling with capital stock of 5 000. Subscribers are F J Metiuire Edward Griffith J O Powers and Margaret L Meyers of Manchester and H L Holsten of New York.
Fire of alleged incendiary origin wiped out the Bartin Bros flour mill in Klamath Oregon early yesterday, with flour and grain losses. mill loss estimated at 100000 dollars. Officials suspect Industrial Workers of the World agitators. A mass meeting and fed eral aid appeal followed as the sheriff organized a posse.
The search for Miss Lyle W. Sanderson, noted nature writer who vanished three weeks ago, ended yesterday when her body was found in the woods near Haverhill. Authorities say her father was killed last year by a train, and Sanderson had been in low spirits, with friends noting mental strain from wandering.
A high powered automobile carrying Charlve J MacEachern and two companions skidded off Commonwealth at Armstrong street and overturned near a pebble garden. MacEachern was killed and his companions were seriously injured in the July 6 incident.
Three automobile collisions occurred Saturday afternoon in Barre. A City Wine delivery truck crashed into a telephone pole on Granite Street, injuring the chauffeur and a passenger Emilio Portaluppi. The beer van was towed to a garage for repairs. A second crash involved a Fastman store delivery team hit by an Overland touring car on Pearl Street, injuring an elderly onlooker and spilling oil. A third crash on Merchant Street involved a Ford and an Overland car, damaging both vehicles as drivers blamed the sharp turn at Merchant and Summer streets.
Ludvig Cass paid 8.10 and costs 6.05 in county court after being arrested by Deputy Game Warden Charles Keith for fishing without a license at Niggerhead pond on June 24. He claimed a license but gave a fictitious name. Magistrate H. W. Scott heard the case. Earlier, J. L. McNeil of Brookton Mass was fined 25 and costs for fishing in Berlin pond without a license. payment suspended on costs and probation imposed.
Northfield resident James H Merrill appeared before Magistrate H W Scott in Barre on a State's Attorney complaint alleging adultery with the wife of Ella Merrill. Merrill waived examination, was bound over to the September term of Washington County Court in 3500 bail, and remained in custody of Deputy Sheriff Phunett pending bail arrangements with BR Andrews of Northfield. Noted is the warrant’s reference to Miss Emma Wake of Northfield. Word of two brothers of Miss Rachel McLeod killed in France during service reached Springhill after a family reunion in December.

The 11 year old Hazel M Gallant disappeared from her Railroad Street home after a late Saturday night, with the door slightly ajar and only a velvet hat found missing. Sheriff deputy A E Davis and traffic officer Jesse Watts led the daylong search, but no trace of the girl was found as of Sunday morning.
Hyde Park July 16 reports the worst rain storm in memory. Torrential downpour from eight to midnight washed out two bridges on the main road to Johnson, 17 culverts, gullied roads, and significant railroad damage. St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain line lost 30 feet and 300 feet on farms Finnigan and McFarland. Estimated town damage at least 60000. Johnson suffered heavy impact with French Hill washed onto the depot area.
Funeral services for Mrs Ellen RL Frenier wife of the late Henry Prenier were held at St Monica's Church after a Requiem Mass. Bearers included seven of her sons Henry Walter Arthur William Charles R L Uriel and Paul Prenier with Paul recently enlisted in the U S Army. The interment was in the Catholic cemetery on Beckley street.
A lightning strike Saturday evening at 8 80 at EC Smith farm in St Albans started a fire that damaged a barn and hay and spread to nearby buildings. Howard J. Wright reported the loss with several people helping as flames attracted a large crowd.
