Seven Morgan Mares Killed by Lightning
Middlebury July 15 seven Morgan mares valued at 700 to 400 each were killed instantly yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock at the government Morgan horse farm during a severe electrical storm. Lightning struck a tree where the animals stood and all fell dead. Six mares belonged to the United States government and one to E. Stillman of New York City. Lightning also struck the steeple of the Congregational church in Bridport, starting a fire that damaged several thousand dollars. Two farms in Bridport lost buildings, about 4000 dollars in losses, with insurance likely covering most costs. Dr. Ross's yard tree was struck but caused little damage beyond splintering a limb.
