Copenhagen dispatch cites German reports that Polish Reichstag members interpellated the chancellor over deportations of Polish men and women to German labor camps. The interpellation claims the raids resemble Belgium’s case and note troops are used to drag victims from their homes.
Copenhagen July 13 Berlin Lokal Anzeiger reports a message from the Austro-Hungarian government arriving in Berlin stating Von Bethmann Hollweg should remain as chancellor as his retirement could be a fatal error. The telegram is attributed to Count Czernin the Austro-Hungarian foreign minister. Germania denies the Catholic center party demanded the chancellor's resignation but says he may not be suited for peace talks. The centerist leaders think he may stay for the present but should resign before the actual peace conference.
British naval air planes raided targets in and near five towns in Flanders. Bombs caused fires and explosions at Varenantes St Denis Westrem Ghentiles and Ostend. Rail lines an electric power station and a railway siding at Zarren were attacked. A train near St Denis Westrem was bombed. A large blaze near Ostend power station burned for at least half an hour. All aircraft returned safely.
July 13 report identifies ten German subjects in the Miami Arizona area with at least two suspected army officers. They have been traced to nearby mining camps as a loyalty league forms to halt street meetings and, if needed, drive out agitators.
In New York on July 13 the jury in the Sherman act case found 41 defendants not guilty. The trial covered semi bituminous operators and companions in Virginia and West Virginia, with 22 hours of deliberation. Originally 64 individuals and 100 corporations faced charges. many indictments were dismissed.
Harriet A. Varney a Dedham hospital attendant was indicted for the murder of Mrs Pauline Keyes in Brookline on June 19. She pleaded not guilty and was held without bail for trial. Keyes, husband of the deceased, was held on $5,000 bond. A note near the body and an alleged alibi figure in the案.
In Douglas Arizona July 13 a convoy of 1197 I W W members deported from Bisbee faced a refused unload and detoured 20 miles west of Columbus Mississippi. Sheriff Harry Wheeler rode with the train and said the prisoners threatened to return on the first passenger train. A 200 man armed police force was called to prevent an invasion. News dispatches were held until 4 o'clock, amid order of army censorship believed directed by mine officials.
The Finnish Diet passed the second reading of a bill that virtually establishes Finland's independence. Premier Looff calls back ministers with army ties to Helsinki as Finland awaits the constituent assembly. Russia fears the move while Sordalists show sympathy. Helsinki plans to enact the bill tomorrow without Russia's approval.
Newport July 13 Henry Diamond found guilty of smuggling plum and sentenced to two years six months in Atlanta federal prison plus $20 fine. H Harry Sharpe ex cashier of Bennington County National Bank pleaded guilty to embezzlement and received five years in Atlanta prison. Flora Hyatt of Derby fined ten dollars and costs for using canceled postage stamps.
Dr Milo B Hillegas announced the state weloo of agriculture will open in the fall with a committee to pick a site for a new dormitory, plan and report to the state board of education. The report through June 30 2016 counts an estimated building cost of 90000 with prior legislature approval of 89500 for construction and equipment.
Vergennes July 18 C C White of East Shoreham was arrested on intoxication and reckless driving after Mrs Cora Duprey sustained serious injuries when struck by White’s car Wednesday evening. Duprey, 60, was in the front yard with Mrs Russell, dragged under the wheels and thrown against a tree. her arm was broken and she is described as likely to feel lasting shock.
Two prosecutions for speeding took place. Ralph Merrill of Hesex pleaded guilty to driving faster than allowed and paid a 65 fine plus costs. Eon Fleary of Athans also admitted speeding on Main Street at 20 mph and paid 5 plus costs. The case proceeds were presided by City Attorney Pret.
Vermont leaders meet at Hotel Vermont to launch a state wide appeal for 15000 to fund recruiting and war work. Governor Graham and Vermont Committee of Public Safety executives back a drive to boost enlistments, with Chittenden County’s share near 1000, and Vermont National Guard units nearing war strength. The effort also coordinates food production Red Cross work and equipment support from the federal government while noting shortages in ordnance for lat Vermont infantry. Attendees include former governors Mead Fletcher and other state officials. Governor Graham reviews Vermont Home Guards officers during Norwich University camp.

War Department statement from Washington on July 14 sets a total draft of 587,000 from registered men to fill vacancies in the National Guard and regular army. State quotas include Vermont 1,042. Connecticut 10,977. Maine 1,421. Massachusetts 20,586. New Hampshire 1,204. New York 69,241. Rhode Island 1,801. Credits for all National Guard and pre April 1 service are allowed. Governors instructed to allot quotas among exemption boards. Actual National Guard strength credits include those in service prior to April 1.
John Stenoski, a Russian Pole, was found bleeding from a seven inch abdominal wound near Curtis avenue in Rutland. Officers brought him to the station and hospital after doctors treated his injury with carbolic acid reportedly to aid the wound. He wore partly women’s clothing and claimed he fell on the railroad track, with authorities suspecting a suicide attempt.
Burlington July 13 A chance for Vermont boys to enter the navy as aviators will be offered by the Burlington recruiting office next week. Eight landsmen for machinists mates will go to Pensacola Florida for an 18 month course at the naval aviation school. A quartermaster must accompany each machinists mate. Machinists must be over 21 with good references and will train as flying mechanics and pilots if needed. The quartermasters train as pilots and observers and must know airship engines. Carl S Sterns of Middlebury enlisted recently as landsman and will be sent to Norfolk Virginia. J Stevens of Beekmantown awaits orders.

George Robinson of Barre received a five year term in the state prison at Windsor for assault with intent to kill. He pleaded guilty in Orange County court at Chelsea after police intervened in Williamstown a week earlier. Robinson, a semi plumper, was arrested by Constable Norman J. Pratt and later transferred to the state prison. The incident followed his wife’s return from Texas and threats at his brother’s home, prompting authorities to intervene and detain him.
Washington D C July 13 an embargo effective immediately bans all shipments intended for export of commodities named in the export proclamation except when a bill of lading is presented with a federal license number authorized by the export council in Washington. The embargo was ordered by the American Railway association's commission on car service.
Six further polio cases were reported to the Vermont state health secretary. New cases appeared in Websterville and Montpelier areas, with four in Montpelier and one in East Montpelier, while Chittenden County reported none. Richmond closed all movi theater and dance venues. Shelburne ordered two week quarantines for children under 15 from polio districts. officials warn scattered isolated cases likely as outbreaks unfold. Dr. Edward Taylor returned from Montpelier and found no new developments after visiting Richmond.
Barre Town health officer Dr. E. H. Bailey reports an infantile paralysis case in Websterville involving Marion Scott, a 7 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott. The child shows partial leg weakness and fever and has remained at home. Neighbor Dan Methomald, 16, also suffers symptoms but may not have transmitted the disease.
Burglary at Fred H. Davis general store in Westminster last night broke into the Post Office inside the store. Locks removed by boring holes. $20 stolen. Two men seen near the railroad station about 2 AM. Davis suspects professional yeggs.
About 100 residents from Park and East streets attended a flag raising on Perrin Hill. The Inter-Street Pleasure club, which erected a 40 foot flagpole near Charles A. Lundgren’s home, hosted a program led by Wendell Lundgren and Rev. Edgar Crossland who spoke on civic duty and democracy. Mildred White raised the flag for George Perrin, with a patriotic salute and songs. The club, formed by Perrin hill youths, promotes leisure, wireless telegraphy, tennis, camping and hikes, with Clarence Bartlett handling electrical work for the lab and officers listed.
Police headed by Constable Morris raid Mrs Beatricio Pasetto's flat in the Tomasi tenements and seize Cook's cream ale. Mrs Pasetto arraigned before Magistrate Scott on selling liquor charges, pleads not guilty, bail set at 1 dollar. Officer Dineen and Chief Sinclair lead raid. husband Joseph Passilia arrested for similar charges and bailed at 40 dollars. A hearing tonight in the covert room and a city court session tomorrow morning are planned.
Miss Bessie Waters aged 8 yesterday married Harley Holbrook in Ebenezer. She lies in critical condition after a street collision on Wednesday evening while riding with her fiancé. Hospital and fiancé's family await updates as doctors fear skull fracture.
