Heavily reinforced Germans launched strong assaults on the Somme last night but British troops repelled the attacks and regained portions of Mametz and Thiepval Wood with gains reported near Mametz and Trones Wood as London admits.
London July 12 reports say a German submarine attacked the English coast town of Seaham Harbour, firing shrapnel and killing a woman. The nation says all other attacks were beaten off as German forces reinforced on the Somme front, making gains at Mametz and Trones Wood.
London dispatch reports British lines have gained ground though not extensive and British forces under Haig claim success after 12 days of fighting. French forces similarly ready to strike German flanks while forming new positions. German assaults renew on Verdun, capturing Damloup wood. In the north, Russians fight tough battles in Bukowina and along the Stokhod as Austrians and Germans resist.
London July 12. The English part of Seaham Harbour was attacked last night by a German submarine. About 30 rounds of shrapnel were fired. One woman was killed and one house was struck by a shell.

Nelson Rabbitt of 16 Church street suffered serious injuries when his Ford touring car skidded jumped a bank and turned turtle about a mile south of the White farm on the Creek road at 9 30 last night. He was taken to Rutland hospital by Dr F H Gebhardt. Rabbitt aged about 22 had only yesterday begun a new position with E Noyes Taxie company. Internal injuries are serious but not yet determined. The car was not badly damaged.
