A hard storm wrecked Bradford Pennsylvania with about 75 homes demolished. Five people were confirmed dead and 12 more reported missing as rescues faced dangerous conditions. Authorities fear many missing may be buried beneath rubble in the disaster zone.
A fierce electrical storm with high winds and a cloudburst swept a region near Pittsburg causing five deaths and many injuries. Bradford suffered major damage including a tornado that demolished 75 houses. two campers near Clinton and a farmer at Greensburg were killed by lightning. Dozens more injured, nine unaccounted for, and communications crippled.
Brattleboro reports a lightning sparked blaze yesterday destroyed Zenas Busby’s house and barn known as the William Hicks place in Whitingham, with an $8,000 loss. The barn fire occurred after hay was nearly gathered. help arrived late due to distance and lack of telephone. Livestock and most household furniture were saved, and only light insurance coverage. Lightning also struck C S Goodnow’s Whitingham home, blowing off a chimney but causing no further damage.

Coblenz July 1 The Associated Press reports army officers uncovered a plot to steal American supplies for shipment to Germany. Three cars of bacon and three cars of tires and tubes were recovered near the bridgehead, with several Germans arrested. Officers say shipments have been moving for weeks or months, with losses running to millions of marks.
Paris reports in conference circles the curt response from Holland over the allied demand regarding the former German crown prince was expected. Allied and associated powers view the reply as reflecting possible dereliction by the Dutch government, not signaling a stance on the final surrender beyond that issue.

William Dupree aged 3, of 7 North Avenue, was killed instantly in Burlington when a hay load fell as it was about to enter a barn. The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon near the Mary Fletcher hospital. Death was due to a fractured spinal column at the neck. He leaves a wife, Auna.
A fire damaged a barge and a dock within 280 feet of the Corn Products company main plant at Edgewater as a man was injured. Officials investigated the origin of the blaze seen today.

Middlebury residents learned of the drowning death of Miss Gertrude M Donahue when her body was recovered yesterday afternoon by diver Charles Vaboriceo of Burlington. She had fallen from a canoe on Lake Dunner during a rescue attempt with a companion, and was taken to her parents home for funeral arrangements. The 1902 Northfield born graduate, who moved here four years ago, will lie in state at Blackmer funeral lots and be buried after a 10 o'clock Saturday Mass at St Mary's Catholic Church.
A federal court dissolved the Boston Fish Pier company and the Bay State Fishing company after ruling they were legally combined under the Sherman act. The court found that Boston pier dealers dominated the North Atlantic fresh fish trade and ordered the New England Fish Exchange to revise its rules to comply with government requirements.
Private Edward J C Wells of Burlington, recently returned from overseas, vanished after a brief visit with his parents on July 1. Discharged from the 24th Infantry in France, he reenlisted in the coast artillery, was about 22, and previously served with the Vermont National Guard. He had around 700 dollars on him and was shell shocked after long service.
Vermont branch of the National Association of Postmasters held a morning meeting in Barre at the Knight’s Inn Wall. Doctor Rufus F. Barton aged 74 died at 2 a.m. at the home of his daughter Mrs A A Sargent on French Street after a sudden brain failure. A former Wallingford and Altamont physician, he attended Dartmouth and the University of Michigan, retiring in 1910. Burial plans include Ludlow with a funeral at Mendon town and Albany lodge connections noted.
