French forces completed the seizure of Corcy including the Chateau and Farm of St. Paul as part of a night attack near the Corey railway station southwest of Soissons. The operation wrested the position from German control, with accompanying gains reported along the frontline.
The French widened positions east of Retz Forest as they captured Corey and the St Paul farm south of Soissons, securing the Villers-Cotterets zone. British gains east of Villers-Bretonneux strengthened the eastern Somme defenses, while raiding dominated the rest of the allied front. The Franco Italian pressure pushed Austrian forces in Albania toward Skumbi and Elbasan as Macedonian fighting spread eastward. Bulgarian attacks north of Monastir were repulsed with heavy losses.
London July 11 in a local operation south of the Somme east of Villers Bretonneux the British positions were improved by the action. The German bombardment last night was somewhat heavy on the British positions and continues to menace the area.
An official Rome dispatch reports unchecked Italian advance in Albania toward Berat. From Vagusa to Someni the Italians span about fifteen miles on a fifty mile front. An Austrian line is described as new and defensive with a French detachment repulsed in the Devoll valley, per Vienna war office.
Paris reports French troops captured Corey southwest of Soiksons, securing the town and railway station, plus the chateau and St. Paul farm as part of a push east of Bets forest. Fifty prisoners were taken, including one officer, with two raids on Maleons-des-Champagne and another unnamed site yielding about a dozen captives.
Italian troops pressing in Albania push the Austro-Hungarians back toward the Skumbi river about 25 miles north of Berat. American pursuit planes operate north of Chateau-Thierry, flying 50 miles into German lines.
Lieutenant Georges Flachaire, credited with twelve German planes shot down, announced a Detroit to Chicago flight next Sunday in a late model Spad fighter. He expects to complete the journey in under four hours.
Amsterdam reports Hugo Haas, leader of the minority Socialists, claims since German entry into Finland about 6,000 workers have been arrested with many executed. He cites deaths of premier and 50 Socialist MPs, German rule in Livonia and Estonia, and notes executions including a 10 year old boy and a 15 year old for arms and manifestos. A woman, Julia Datt, is said to have been executed.
York marked a special holiday with 500 American soldiers parading through the main streets. The lord mayor read a letter from the American embassy thanking President Wilson for the visit of the Archbishop of York to the United States. General Maxwell spoke at the Guildhall, praising the soldiers for their grit in France.
An Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Copenhagen quotes a Swedish-born source returning from Moscow claiming Alexei Romanov, former czar Nicholas II's son and heir apparent, has been killed by a Bolshevik soldier with a bomb. The report notes prior unconfirmed deaths and recent rumors about his fate.
Italian Headquarters reports from July 11 indicate Austro-Hungarian losses in the recent offensive reached about 250000. A two hundred strong posse hunted a dozen robbers believed hidden in a Marais De Cygne timber patch after a southbound Missouri Kansas and Texas train was held up near Kach siding south of Paola. Three were shot, mail and express cars rifled, and a quantity of registered mail taken. later, John Purroy Mitchel’s funeral drew a vast New York crowd.
A soldier train on the Vicksburg Shreveport and Pacific line overturned in a ditch between Faughton and Doylene Louisiana, about 17 miles from Shreveport. Dr J K Sheppard reporting from near the scene said six soldiers were injured and two men pinned but not mortally hurt. Accident blamed on railroad weather?
Italian torpedo boats attacked Austrian dreadnoughts in the Adriatic near the Dalmatian islands after German admiralty pressure for an Austrian naval expedition. The leading battleship and a second were torpedoed, one by two hits and the other by one. The Italian ministry claimed the dreadnoughts were sunk.
A 25 year old white soldier, Nat Hoffman from Pennsylvania, was hanged at Camp MacArthur in Waco Texas for attacking an 11 year old girl last April. The court martial sentence was affirmed by Washington. The crime occurred near Camp MacArthur in a secluded area with a boy present, and the boy reported the incident to military police who captured the suspect.
Paris July 11 A Zurich dispatch reports that the German general headquarters conference accepted the resignation of Foreign Secretary Von Kuehlmann. Attended by the emperor, Chancellor Von Hertling and Admiral Von Hintze, the meeting followed speculation of Von Hintze Calarel’s appointment by French parties as a German military response to the Reichstag. The piece notes heavy military influence in Germany and signals a desire for war to the end.
New York reports a German submarine that attacked the American steamer Lake Forest about 1400 miles off Cape Henry was believed sunk by the Lake Forest’s guns after a two hour engagement. Captain Herbert HO Johnson, in command, has been commended to the Navy Department for sinking the submarine.
The steam trawler Georg with nineteen crew members was sunk in a collision with the steamer Bristol off the New England coast in dense fog. All hands were rescued by the Bristol and landed at an Atlantic port today. Captain Percy Firth and Captain Hart said the crash was unavoidable. the trawler carried no cargo.
Federal employment directors in states with weaker child labor standards were advised by the Department of Labor to observe former federal rules. They were reminded that the old law barred under sixteen from mining and quarry work and under fourteen from cannery mill and factory jobs.
Washington July 1 army health report notes conditions at home camps remain unsatisfactory. Deaths for the week totaled 112, up from 81 the previous week, highlighting ongoing health concerns in the camps.
Barre St Albans and St Johnsbury police joined to arrest Montreal real estate operator Joseph E Deny on a charge of selling mortgaged property. He was jailed in Barre then sent toward St Johnsbury with Sheriff Holmes assisting. Dr J D Bachand and a noted local attorney were involved as authorities traced him through Woodsville and Woodville before custody.
The aircraft production inquiry under the Justice Department, led by Attorney General Gregory and Charles F. Hughes, gained new momentum with NW Kellogg arriving from Washington. Kellogg’s presence tightens secrecy as the investigation may stretch into next week. The officials plan to stay until the inquiry’s full findings are ready, with no public release before President Wilson’s consent.
In Barre last night, Kenzie and David Morgan were wed at the home of Mr and Mrs John. Rev J B Reanion officiated. The ceremony featured bridesmaid Jessie Maley and Raymond Wheaton as attendant. After lunch the couple departed for a short wedding trip. Morgan plans to enter mechanics’ school in Burlington while Mrs Morgan remains in Barre during his training.
Dr JF Stewart of West Street has earned a commission as a first lieutenant in the U S medical corps and awaits orders to report for duty. He plans to join the post soon after. He has served as secretary of the local board of health and cared for private practice. He is the fourth Barre doctor from the city to enter service, joining Dr PS Duffy and Dr J A Wark among the first. Dr W K Lasell recently received a captaincy and expects to be called shortly.
Washington announces plans for Navy observance of Bastille Day and elaborates on ship dress and salute protocol. Secretary Daniels message directs officers to cooperate with local celebrations while awaiting Gordon Paddock arrival as U S consul at Tabriz. Paddock departed Tabriz amid threats from Turks when the consulate and hospital were sacked. state department confirms his safe arrival.
President Wilson vetoed the resolution adopted by Congress last week that would extend the time the United States Railroad Administration might relinquish control of roads not kept in the system. The action comes as the administration seeks to wind down wartime control and return rail assets to private hands.
Washington county local board lists registrants going to Burlington and Springfield for training. The draft summary notes one change mid list with about 100 names across Barre, Waterbury, Montpelier, and nearby towns. Gerald J. Hale, Barry Dowenico Salvador, and Joseph H.
