A New York Central train derailed near Newton Hook after a freight car left the track on a switch. One man was killed outright when a fireman was crushed under a fire box. others were injured as survivors jumped free and were taken to a hospital.
A rear end crash near Middletown on the New York New Haven and Hartford line damaged a locomotive and derailed freight cars in a collision between a special paper train and a freight train. No injuries were reported though fog hampered visibility and train crews struggled to clear the wreckage.
A 17 year old boy Aja of Spain died after entering a quarry hole during a youth outing. Companions fled in fright as the body could not be recovered at first. Police attempted rope work and grappling to reach the diver but found no trace. Survived by his father and mother in Spain.
A car crash near town left Asa driving the vehicle with a broken spine and two companions severely injured. Walter Mondreac of North on bridge sustained a thigh fracture and internal injuries. The wreck occurred when the Potter car turned onto the road to avoid an approaching vehicle, causing the collision.
Danvers Maye reports a body recovered from a well at the Wit C. Badnett estate in Boston after a farm hand saw the rope when drawing water. Medical examiner K Foster of Peabody suspects death by suicide, noting no marks and clothing in poor condition, with the body remaining in the water about eight days.

Peter Pratt, 19, arrived in Burlington from Jericho on Fat Sunday and attempted a forger’s scheme. He carried a $2 check, then presented a $15 check signed by M D Butler to obtain dental work. Bank staff notified authorities. Pratt confessed to forging the notes. He was jailed, arraigned, and released on $600 bail with a promise to plead guilty and face probation.
A lightning bolt struck J. Allen’s farm in Duxbury, setting the barn ablaze and destroying its contents while Mr. Alien and the Mreds man were nearby. The bolt struck within six feet of Mr. Allen as they worked inside the structure.
The funeral of Dr. J. Edward Downey was held at 2 PM Saturday from Hedting M. HE church with Rev. KA. Diehnp officiating. Many friends and relatives from Montpelier, Berlin, and nearby communities attended. Interment followed in Elmwood Cemetery with the Gale family plot.
The Reverend William Shaw, pastor of the Methodist church in this city, was informed by Bishop McIntyre of St Paul that he has been appointed superintendent of the St Albans district of the Vermont conference. He succeeds the late Reverend G W Trant and will conclude his pastorate here in about a month.
Rutland July 1 report a Ludlow resident named Petele was cutting feed for his horse when he fell onto a scythe, severing his right hand. He was rushed to Rutland City Hospital where doctors worked to save him and stabilize his condition.
From Chicago comes a report of Elmer Cooper thwarting two men who attempted a robbery with a pistol. A clerk was wounded in the ribs and another man injured as police chased the suspects. Cooper, who showed nerve, assisted bystanders in deterring the attack and aiding the wounded before authorities arrived.
Boston July 1 A Boston officer attempting to arrest a member of a crowd of picnickers in Charlestown was forced to draw his revolver. One man, 22, from Somerville, was wounded in the shoulder and another in the neck escaped. two others were arrested. Albert Johnean from Beaton later charged with attempting to be princer. Anderton, from Somerville, was arrested for complicity in the assault.
Obituary notices the death of Margaret Ferguson Mackenzie who died July 27 in Montreal after three weeks illness from typhoid fever. She was a nurse at Homeropathic hospital and daughter of Inverness residents Mrs and the late Dugald Mackenzie. Survived by mother Mrs M A Mackenzie two sisters Gertrude and Misses in Montreal and by Rev J D Mackenzie pastor of the First Presbyterian in Barre VT. Also survived by brother William H Murchie of Inverness. Married life to late Wallace Mackenzie of Weir Quebec ended with his death from heart disease February 1. She had been a teacher in public schools before moving to northern regions and later entered Homeopathic hospital for relief. Her character praised by authorities as one of the best and most devoted workers.
Atsie Aykrold, a year-old girl from East Boston, swam solo from Revere Bench to Hosepoint Nebant and back, battling treacherous current. The daring feat took over hours and twenty minutes in the July heat.
A peculiar bone skeleton was found in a box near Burlington and transported to a laboratory. The investigation traced the box to a man named Jainen, who had discovered the skeleton and notified authorities. In Lyndonville a five cornered postmaster contest was held, J P Webster’s term ends March 1, and J M LeBourveau was appointed. LeBourveau, born Ascot Canada July 15 1967, moved to West Burke at age two, trained as a dispatcher, and married Gertrude Mower. He expects to assume duties immediately.
A three year old girl from Best Barre was found ill from suspected poison. A physician treated her after a note about poison tablets was left nearby. The child recovered within hours after medical care at the scene.
A Montpelier resident sustains injuries after a lightning strike described as a momentary burst of force. Bystanders recount confusion and a quick response by nearby witnesses and emergency services.
Antonio Pedrozzo a Portuguese immigrant living with Road Commissioner Ro Witham near Barre Town killed himself Saturday afternoon after years of discouragement over money and prospects. His body was found by Wil Liberant and Hébert Lowry two boys near an irrigation path leading from the road to a spring. A revolver bullet to the forehead and a silk handkerchief indicated suicide. Letters and a cheerful note from a Barre Town girl were found on him. he had planned a trip, possibly for hospital treatment, and had recently worked at Morrison farm and for George Wheaton. Autopsy by Drs. Stone and Bailey confirmed a forehead wound from a pistol. He was 26, had lived in Barre Town for about a year, and his parents remained in Portugal. He leaves a brother John in this city and sisters in Massachusetts.

Thomas Finley aged 70, a well to do farmer on the road to Finesburg, was found Saturday afternoon dead at his home. It is supposed he died by his own action. The cause is unknown. He is survived by a wife and several children.
The ninth annual Aranite City camp picnic in Na Ana Woodmen of America featured a bold all day program at Shepard's re gatorday. About 500 people including wives and children enjoyed a lively day of games and athletic events culminating in a lively baseball match between married and single members. Close races for youth and girl events highlighted the day as emotions ran high and spectators cheered. Officials A W Lotanger J for Vaiowing and others led races and torch events while judges Gilbert Phelps Alex Etwelle and Duncan McMillan oversaw the proceedings with satisfaction.
The Owls held their first annual outing at Caledonia Park Saturday with many members wives families and friends attending. Events included strongman contests races for women and children and a dancing pavilion with Bruce’s orchestra. Peter Alexander won the standout games while Jim Coutts and Charles See led a rival effort, and a committee organized the day with Henry Alexander Lewis Inberid Wy Og Meekie Kino Mageglund and George Youngson.

A society dancer died after a blaze at a party in Allston on July 11. The fire, caused by an accident during a gathering, injured several guests including Allston social figure Mase Kosten. Investigators say risky setup of decorative flames led to the uncontrolled fire.
