French forces launch three distinct charges along a 590 meter front at Champagne driving into trenches. The offensive creates a new breakthrough along the western line as they press into fortified positions.
Paris reports a fresh French attack in Champagne with trenches captured along 400 metres west of Mesnil. In Somme, 950 Germans were captured near Barleaux as French forces advance toward Biaches opposite Peronne. German attacks in Vosges were checked by French machine guns.
A gigantic merchant submarine named Deutschland reached Baltimore Maryland after a remarkable voyage across the Atlantic. It dodged French and English craft during its undersea journey, marking a notable maritime milestone.
The large German merchant submarine Deutschland docked at Baltimore sailing past the Virginia capes after a 15 day voyage from Bremerhaven. It carried mail and dyestuffs plus 750 tons capacity and items to unload at Eastern Forwarding in Baltimore. Captain Koenig led 20 crew aboard, and the vessel, described as a commercial liner, traveled over four thousand miles, avoiding enemy ships, and awaited formal ceremonies before entering port.

A TH16 Overland driven by Raleigh Battles of East Hardwick slid into a 10 foot embankment a mile north of North Montpelier Sunday forenoon at about 10 30 injuring Mrs. Gritties and Mr. Battles. Mrs. Gritties suffered a fracture of the right arm and wrist sprain while Battles had a bad cut on his leg. Dr. Frank Wheeler treated the injured then the Battles returned home after dressing. The crash occurred at a narrow passage where front wheel slipped over the tank and the car could not stop before plunging. The top was crushed and minor damage resulted.
On West Dummerston Road near Brattleboro a collision between Lemuel Gilson of Guilford riding a motorcycle behind Martin Tinteman of Bellows Falls and John Manley Jr. in a Saxon roadster caused Gilson to lose much of his lower right leg. Tinteman sustained a severe scalp wound and a thigh gash, Manley was uninjured aside from exposure. Both riders were taken to Memorial Hospital for treatment by Dr. H P Greene.
Two Harley Davidson motorcycles collided in front of a blacksmith shop near the Middlesex river bend. Both machines carried two riders from Montpelier area. one sidecar, one tandem. Bystanders note a non reckless cause due to the road curve limiting visibility. No serious injuries, but both cycles damaged with bent forks and wrecked front wheel. vehicles sent to repair shops.
F. AS Williams of Bennington, last of four brothers who served in the Civil War, died yesterday afternoon. The Vermont Infantry veteran, who saw service in Iowa Branington, was the final surviving member of his family.
In New York on July 1 0 the German submarine Deutschland arrived near Virginia Capes carrying about 100 tons of chemicals and dye stuffs for five New York houses. Hadinche & On Cascelin Calor Berlin Drug and Bayer received shipments. Merchants say the cargo aids the drug trade and dye shortage, with Germany blocking larger mail consignments.
Washington reports that British and French embassies pressed the United States to verify the German submarine Deutschland’s status upon arrival at Baltimore. Naval experts will assist Treasury officials. initial notices say the vessel was unarmed, crewed by civilians, carrying cargo, and not a warship. Details on owners and crew composition remain to be established.
Pedro Luiz pleaded guilty to breach of the peace in Montpelier city court. He was fined 250 and costs, sentenced to not less than one year and not more than three years in the house of correction, suspended on payment of flor and paste, and placed on probation. The case involved an alleged knife attack on Ernest Hulet and theft of John McMahon's coat. William Cahill was sent to jail for failing to pay a 15 fine and 7.35 costs.
Burlington July 10 a man wearing a dark hood with eye holes dragged Bertha Cirpus into woods on the dower road to Winodaki. Edward Lemoux and Jonoph Lee intervened and fought the fugitive, who was captured and jailed for the assault.
George Mann, driving a team for Willey Street, was thrown when a Fruit Company delivery wagon struck the team. He suffered a bad bruise to the head and several injuries but was not seriously hurt. Attended by Dey, tafty? and Chandler.

Mexican ambassador designate Arredondo told Acting Secretary Polk that Villa forces were moving north toward Boquillas Texas. The Mexican government promised cooperation with Carranza troops to round up bandits in the Big Bend district.

Miss Ethel May Davis and Viral A M Arey, both of Montpelier, were married in a Berlin ceremony. The bride came to Montpelier from Portland Missouri and is employed as a conductor by Montpelier Traction & Power. The couple resides in Montpelier with Arey being the son of Mrs Arey of Barre.
A Greater Vermont association meeting will be held in Montpelier July 12 and 13 with notable speakers including George Harvey and Rolland Spaulding. Tickets for the Wednesday banquet are $1.40, limited to Barre attendees, with a balcony seating Barre ladies.
The tenth annual Fast Montpelier Evangelical Campmeeting starts Friday July 14 and runs through Sunday July 24 with three daily services at 10:90, 2:20 and 7:30 p m. Rev D W Staffeld leads, assisted by Rev C J Harvill and others. Ground near Fairmont station offers tents, boards, and lodging at low rates.
A large turnout of about 201 attended the Presbyterian Sunday School picnic at Caledonia Park near Montpelier on Saturday. The event combined a circus and park sports with races, kicks, ball throws, and a soccer match, finishing with good weather and ice cream served by the men’s club.
Funeral services were held Friday for Areme Bonnar at Perry and Newnan Undertaking Rooms on Depot Square. The service included a brief sermon by the Reverend W. Heatthe of the Epicropal church, with pallbearers William Seiam Warnes and others named. Interment followed at Hope cemetery.
Sohn Dennehy, 22, of Haverhill Massachusetts, was shot in the stomach at Montpelier Junction on June 20 and died at Heaton Hospital at 6 this morning after a 10 day battle for life. An autopsy was performed by State Pathologist Dr. Bingham H. Stone to determine weapon size and aid investigators. A grand jury inquest was planned in the courthouse unless Judge Dale could reach the site in time. Dennehy leaves a father and sister in Haverhill. relatives were in town after knott ing and hospital visits.
The funeral was held Sunday at 11:30 from St Monica’s church for William Quinlan who died Thursday. Knights of Columbus attended and corps marched from 172 North Main. Interment was at Catholic cemetery on Brockley Street. Pallbearers included Lane, Bush, Byrnes, Pine, Averill, Moore. Honorary bearers listed. special K of C delegation attended. Quinlan, born in New Brunswick in 1890, lived in the city nearly 92 years and worked in the granite industry before health declined.
Funeral services for Fred Adams, who died Saturday afternoon from brain hemorrhages, were conducted from his daughter Mrs Elmer Clark's home at 96 Maple Keo mie. Rev Bert J Lehigh officiated with Mrs M D Lanshy singing three selections. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Fred Adams of Fawston and others from Montpelier Plainfieth Unterment and local mourners. pallbearers named were Charles Carpenter SS Smith Thomas Bailey Fred Williams D Dantes and L Crawford.
Firefighters battled a cellar fire in the old market building in Burlington on July 10. The blaze started under the street department office amid tar barrels and timber, prompting rapid response from Fire Station No 4. No lives lost, and damage limited by quick action though voting booths and timbers sustained charring and the structure required repairs.
