French forces delivered a sharp blow north of Paris advancing about two and a half miles and capturing 450 troops. General Petain's men moved a mile into enemy territory at points and repelled a counterattack promptly.
French troops struck the German lines just north of Paris with tanks aiding the advance along a 2.5 mile front. About 450 prisoners were taken as French forces pressed to protect key rail junctions near Antheuil and Montdidier while Allied units stabilized gains along the Marne front and British lines faced raids.
British naval air planes bombed German works at Ostend Zeebrugge and targets at all Direct hits observed on buildings and vessels Five German aircraft were destroyed and three driven down out of control All British planes returned safely during July 4 to July 7 operations.
Captain Drew Webster, an American infantry officer, died from injuries after a military automobile he drove collided with another vehicle at Villers-Sous-Gres in the Seine-et-Marne department. Ten French officers in the other car were injured. Webster died in Fontainebleu hospital.
French forces attacked west of Antheuil on a two and a half mile front, penetrating enemy positions and gaining about a mile in places. A German counterattack at Logen farm was repulsed while French gains held. About 450 prisoners were captured, including 14 officers, with further gains east of the Retz forest at Long Pont.
London reports raiding actions by British troops east of Arras yielded limited results. German artillery along the Somme front has concentrated shelling on positions recently captured by British forces.
Rome reports continued Allied operations in Albania with land forces aided by British monitors. Italian troops captured Fieri and key heights while the advance freed over 1300 prisoners.
The Vorwaerts Zeitung reports Germans returning from Moscow warn that total anarchy may threaten safety in an orderly country. A Moscow railway strike speaker is quoted urging defiance of Von Mirbach and German capital, urging “away with” him.
A poll of upstate Democratic leaders shown to the committee of 42 indicates no support for William Randolph Hearst for governor. The steering committee presented the finding at an executive session today.
Paris reports Captain Hauttex, a renowned French aviator, says American aid to the allies will arrive soon. Thousands of American pilots and machines are heading to France after training. While chaser planes are in short supply, production is accelerating and Liberty engines are in use. Delays end as public opinion shifts in favor of American aviators.
Washington D. C. July 9 The Island of Guam was devastated by a typhoon on July 6. Governor Captain Roy Smith reports half the inhabitants destitute with crops destroyed and extensive property damage. The Navy Department says relief is being provided from naval food stocks and repairs are underway.
Washington reports confirm Count Von Mirbach was killed in Moscow on July 6 with fighting in the streets. Ambassador Francia in Vologda sent July 7 word to the state department. Wireless lines mention arrests of Bolshevik leaders and revolutions along with street clashes in Moscow and Jaroslav.
General Pershing heads about 3 000 Elks in military service and cabled a greeting to the 100 000 members. The message praised loyalty to the president. Bruce A. Campbell of Illinois was elected grand exalted ruler amid contests for grand secretary and treasurer, with New York and Pennsylvania leading membership.
Hans Merx, longtime church music superintendent in Chicago, was taken to Fort Oglethorpe Georgia for internment after arrest in May charges of espionage. Federal agents say Merx, Austrian reserve officer, conducted correspondence with plot participants. He previously lived in Brooklyn.
Chairman Hurley said the Shipping Board has let contracts for two army transports. After the war the ships will be converted to passenger carrying trade. The announcement follows a White House meeting in Washington.

Peoria residents held twenty two funerals for victims of the steamer Columbia disaster. Services continued through the day at the town cemetery and in Ae Mines where many residents were buried. Federal state and county investigators worked on the wreck while divers inspected the hull. Coroner Lt. Cleary delayed inquest until early next week as officials complete inquiries. Jerry Chiollia of Pokin was recovered, raising the dead to at least two dozen. ten others remain missing.
IS IN MOSCOW Washington July Felix Willoughby Smith United States consul at Tiflis has arrived in Moscow to assist the consulate. He left Tiflis with allied consular forces as German advances threatened. Vice Consul Hooker A. Doo little may have accompanied him Consul William L. Jenkins left Trebizond to join Moscow forces. No safety concerns were reported at the state department.
Charles T. Thompson of the Associated Press has been awarded the Italian army service decoration for his wartime reporting on the Austro Italian front and the Isonzo line. He was slightly wounded in the right cheek during a battle observed from Gorizia castle ramparts last October.
An American warship arrived in Buenos Aires on Monday for a courtesy visit tied to Argentina independence day. Vice Admiral William B. Caperton of the U S N will arrive from Chile tomorrow to participate in the celebration.

New York July 9. Dr Edward A Rumely publisher of the Evening Mail faced bail at 845000 on a charge of conspiring in a case alleging the Mail is owned by the German government. Authorities said 1941000 in German loans funded Rumely’s stock purchase through Berlin accounts and bank transfers. Bondholders taking charge of the paper were named by Henry L Stoddard, president of the Mail and Express.
Washington July 9 The seven month inquiry by the department of justice and secret service with New York authorities led to the arrest of Dr. Rymely of the New York Aigil Publishing company. Assistant Attorney General Brien indicated the inquiry is far from closed and more arrests are expected. The Mail is claimed to be chiefly German government owned and actions will proceed under federal law. American creditors gain first claim in administration of property by the alien property custodian, with remaining German imperial equity to be seized.
Secretary Baker asked Henry B. Endicott to mediate a strike of 1.6 percent weavers in three Lawrence mills. He noted lost production as 60 000 yards per day amid demands for a 55 percent wage increase. The war department will take charge as the Army contracts loom.
In Cochise county court at Tombstone damage suits totaling 4.4 million dollars target corporations and individuals over the Bisbee deportation of 1,188 copper miners and sympathizers to New Mexico on July 12. Ten suits were filed yesterday with 40 more awaiting filing and many more prepared for future filing.
Trustees hold an adjourned Montpelier meeting this afternoon to decide on engaging a principal for another year. J. W. Hatch is expected to be re elected.
Dr. F. B. Russell, head of the Vermont state school for feeble-minded at Brandon, resigned and the action was reviewed by the state board of control at its Montpelier meeting this afternoon.
William A. Englis and John H. O'Brien of Englis and O'Brien in Boston were arrested on federal indictments for conspiracy to defraud the government of income taxes. The shortage alleged totals 250000, with two sets of books and a civil suit seeking damages of 2000000. Both pleaded not guilty and posted 25000 bonds.
Washington reports no danger of a sugar famine as of July. The food administration says the overall food situation is better than any time since America began feeding the allied world, with definite assurances on sugar supplies.
Barre remains well short of its war savings stamps target with only about half of the $214 000 quota reported. Officials say totals may rise as canvassers submit returns, with a possibility Barre could surpass 110 000 but the drive is far from over. Campaign leaders promise renewed efforts in Barre and Washington County to match other towns.
