Gen W H Gilmore visited Burlington to arrange the annual Vermont National Guard muster from August 6. Contracts for feeding the men will be let. state supplies food while each company provides its own cook. On August 3 advance detachment will lay out camp, pitch tents, and prepare for arrival on August 6. The encampment offers practice in camp life and experiences for the regiment.
At a Rutland license commission meeting Newman Weeks voiced complaints about the license law and specifically the state of saloon windows and doors. The board said the complaints had been carefully considered and investigated and action was taken as deemed advisable.
In Windsor county, George C. Le doux of Bridgewater pleaded guilty to common assault in a case formerly charging assault with intent to murder. He was sentenced to two years in the house of correction for a jealousy fueled attack at the Datton farm near Woodstock on March 13. The State rested its case after a jury was empaneled and the defendant changed his plea.
Berlitol Joly A H B recounts a near fatal incident in King Street vicinity. A man, in poor health and unemployed, attempted to kill himself by stepping onto a Rutland through freight train as it approached, but was interrupted when the engineer shouted and the man reeled back.
Leonard of Northfield, released from the county jail after ten days for intoxication, was rearrested on a furnishing charge and jailed in Northfield. Bail set at 400 dollars. unable to post, preliminary hearing postponed to next Monday. Public notices in Japan describe steel flathooks and old bronze forms. Mitchell Oregon July 8 Martin Puet sparked a spree. town marshal unable to arrest. Milt De Haven armed with rifle volunteers to capture Puet. Puet shot De Haven. Miss Ethyl Hates of Bates family and Willem Moon of Barre wed in a July 9 service at home. About fifty relatives attended as bridesmaid Sualt Hates wore white, best man Chilles McMillan Jr. assisted. The couple left for a wedding trip and will reside in Barre at Washington and Dewey streets, receiving many gifts.
Charles A. Smith of Montpelier, in charge of the granite die for the Chester A. Arthur monument at Fairfield, crossed by rail cargo and hauled by sixteen horses to clear the line. The block weighed about 12 tons and was moved 200 feet with blocks and tackle for safe passage. Simon Wookie and local laborers will return to Montpelier or Hartford to finish hauling the stone.

Tripent Stave Anguse and Tovey of Montpelier on a tour visiting the Renal Institutions. They inspected the prison in Montpelier this evening. They proceed to Wisconsin to view the state hospital for the insane and will inspect the state reform school at Rutland on Friday.
