American and French forces penetrated toward Vaux two miles west of Chateau-Thierry capturing the village and surrounding heights. 275 German prisoners were taken along with machine guns and matériel while the French added scores of captives. The advance tightened the Allied line from the Marne to the Clignon and reinforced the push against German salient.
American forces on the Maine front after hard fighting last night captured 275 German prisoners including an officer, took shelter in cellars and dugouts, and disrupted German lines near Vaux and the Paris highway west of Chateau Thierry. Air battles raged with many planes engaged overhead and some shot down. results not yet confirmed. A separate report notes 33 Germans captured in Picardy with an officer among them.
London dispatch reports German troops bombarded northwest of Albert and north of the Somme, regaining a footing in one British trench while other gains were repulsed with losses. Raids near Lens and along the Fly dere front were beaten back, with a few prisoners taken in patrol encounters.
Paris reports troops from the United States and French forces captured the village of Vaux and nearby areas west of Chateau Thierry in a Marne operation. More than 300 persons, including five officers, noted in the action. An eight year old Graniteville girl named Christine Murray underwent abdominal surgery and is reported as doing well. Clarence Haskins of Troyhill, previously with Rivers Pharmacy in Montpelier, has finished his duties and is visiting friends in Sovingfield, Massachusetts.
Columbus mourns Rev. Dr. Washington Gladden, famed Congregational minister and author, after a paralysis attack last Sunday. Born in 1843, he led North Adams and Columbus churches, edited The Independent, and wrote Who Wrote the Bible, advocating ethical reform and church engagement with city and state issues.
London July 2 The Finnish German offensive along the Paavil river in the Murmansk region of northern Russia is viewed in connection with anti Bolshevik developments in Russia. The Times Christiania correspondent says the Germans seek to improve links with southern Russia and press their demands as vital questions face both sides.
Colonel Hurban, now in Tokio, tells The correspondent that Austrian and German captives in Siberia may face retaliation if shootings do not stop. He says he is in contact with Professor Masursk in Washington about reports of killings and asserts 200,000 Austro German prisoners in Siberia are under threat if abuses continue.
Italian Army Headquarters at Monda reports two Czecho-Slovak troops distinguished themselves in the capture of Monte Di Valbella. One prisoner, among Austrian captives, reunited with his brother in the victorious unit, asking who benefits from the offensive as the Italians press the fight.
Washington July 2 The Belgian steamer Chiller was sunk 100 miles off the Atlantic coast. Twenty five survivors were rescued June 27 by a sailing vessel. The vessel was torpedoed by a German submarine about 1400 miles at sea from the Atlantic coast on June 21 and the Chiller sank three days later. The fate of the ship’s crew was not fully known.
London reports a major explosion at a Midlands National well filling factory. Casualties are feared to be between 60 and 70 lives with extensive damage to the plant. Officials say production will be reduced but a partial restart may occur within days. Workers acted valiantly seeking to return.
Washington July 2 Reduction of 108 196 830 in operating income of 123 of the largest railroads under government control during the first five months compared with the same period last year was announced by the Interstate Commerce Commission. For May the operating income rose but remained below 1917. Total five month revenue exceeded 1917 in total rail revenue while expenses grew. eastern roads showed gains, western districts and southern lines varied. John Davidson Louis Sassi and Robert Johnston plan to leave tonight for New Haven Conn to seek munition plant employment.
The department predicts a record cotton crop this year with production around 15,000,000 bales. The June 25 condition is 6 percent above ten year average, and acreage nears the 1913 peak, suggesting a slightly larger output despite some abandonment.
Washington July 2 three cabinet officers urged the Aswell resolution giving the president power to seize telegraph telephone cable and radio systems. The House transferred jurisdiction from the commerce committee to the military committee. Lawmakers indicated no dissent and the military panel planned a favorable report.
Amsterdam July 2 The Swedish government, via the Koelnische Zeitung quoting Wolff bureau, expressed regret to the German minister at Stockholm for recent London statements by Hjalmar Branting, Louis Tomasi, James Comolli and Maic Gindulo. They left for Old Orchard, Maine, to work for the summer at the Lafayette house.
City council hears plea from Hoyt Milne Cook Watkins Mills Shields for additional hydrants in Depot Square to protect granite plants and workers. Cook warns that a fire at one plant could destroy all three. delays could cost 100 jobs. Water committee urged action, planning summer work if labor available. Also discussed sanitary improvements at Church Street Schoolhouse and boarding up windows at River Street bank property. Building permits issued and various payrolls approved.
Private Charles Leno, home from Camp Devens, lost five toes when an axe struck his foot while splitting wood. He underwent amputation of toes at Heaton hospital and was slated to return to Camp Devens soon. Son of Joseph Leno, residing between Montpelier and Middlesex. He had joined a Washington county contingent six weeks ago. unlikely to rejoin service.
Miss Brooks travels to Bonnington New Hampshire for the summer and Florence Finnigan leaves Graniteville for Burl to attend Vermont University summer school. A cook from the 67th Pioneer division arrives from Spartanburg on leave in Websterville. Mary Donetti returns from Bradford after a short visit. Nette, a stenographer at the State House in Montpelier, plans to leave for Washington DC for a government post. Benjamin Hornby, released for intoxication, is back in Barre and faces a second arraignment soon. A Walter L Main circus agent aims for a Vermont date and talks with park officials about a show in Barre. Rev. Edgar Crossland travels to South Ryegate for the installation of Rev. W. P. Halley, with sermons by Rev. Dr. Alex Ian McDonald and others. Barre officials report that federal loan bank funds prompt postponement of major nonessential building projects as part of wartime economy.
Barre launches a war stamps campaign aiming to raise 214060 by January 1. A 100-strong rally at Spaulding school energized captains and canvassers led by Alexander Duncan. Fred Howland urged initial pledges of 1000 dollars, stressing thrift and patriotism, while detailing how $4.18 buys $5 in value.
Gov H P F Graham reported a fresh appeal from the war department for men to join the engineering corps under the same self induction plan used weeks ago. The approach allows men from carpentry, teaming, bridge building, railroad work and other construction trades to apply, with July 18 set for government selection and quota distribution to states.
At a Montpelier special meeting of the Vermont Bar Association two candidates for admission to the bar were examined. One man is already in the service and the other will enter. Names were not disclosed.
The district board Monday afternoon sent back to the Washington county local board papers under consideration for reclassification. Four men were altered by the local board: Karle Hayden from 40 to 20, Paul Asa from 20 to LA, Basel T Seiten from BC to 1A, Arpuittes 7 Gouletti 1839 from 21 to 1A. Reclassification work continues at the lead board with likely changes expected though no official announcements have been issued yet.
Farle C. Hayden, a Berlin native and Norwich University engineering graduate, has been engaged as manager of the Washington County Farmers Exchange. He succeeds the previous manager who resigned to pursue other work after a period in the West.
