Paris reports a French detachment repulsed German efforts near the Lorraine border south of Leintrey. The official account notes trench occupants were killed or captured and prisoners taken during night operations.

London reports January British casualties total 32 354 with 900 officers and 31 104 men, bringing the Somme period toll to 52 371. A despatch from Belton notes 240 lost aboard the Laurentic after hitting a mine, sinking in about ten minutes. boats saved some crew, others perished or were rescued. Albany Governor Whitman endorses repealing boxing statutes after the death of Stephen McDonald in a sessional prize fight. Boxer Toidy Hicks and others face second degree manslaughter charges as coroner orders autopsy to confirm cause of death. McDonald weighed 153 pounds, entered the ring against his wishes of his parents and died after a blow to the heart area.

Derby Jan 31 Mrs. Alton Wheeldon, her three daughters, and Alfred George Mason husband of one, were charged at Qualdhall with conspiring to murder Premier Lloyd Hesrgey and Arthur Henderson of the House of Commons and war council. They denied knowledge of the charge and declined to comment. After evidence on arrest, the case adjourned until Saturday.
