In Chicago on January 28 squads of police reserves patrolled Ghetto districts all night to prevent a riot by unemployed garment workers. Police were fired upon three times but unharmed. Rioting followed speeches by Morris Bernstein and Harry Wishnewaky of the Industrial Workers of the World.
In Claremont New Hampshire Edward S Ago of Boston was seized by Chief Elmer Cole as he began addressing about 400 workers on Central Street. Ago asserted rights to speak to machinists while another organizer cited a constitutional permit before he was told to come with the chief.
San Francisco reports the worst storm of the season has subsided. Rain eased as floods benefited farms orchards irrigation reservoirs and placer mining. Normal train service is returning rapidly though Southern Pacific Coast line may not resume through service for a week. Some towns including Santa Barbara remain cut off from railroad communication.
Chicago report details three Cleveland pitchers Falkenburg Banding Kahler deserting to the Federal League. Falkenburg joins Indianapolis, Banding to Toronto, Kahler to Pittsburgh. Federal officials declined comment while fans call it a triumph for the new league.
Mexico January 28 authorities charge Fidencio Hernandez and Guillermo Meaueira with involvement in a plot to overthrow the federal government. Some arrested figures are tied to Gen. Felice’s fortune. Gen. Fernando Gonzales, once linked to sports reports, has been abroad. Summary executions are officially denied.

Hillsburg Ontario reports Edgar Simpson, 27, shot and killed Lie and his mother, then barricaded himself inside a farmhouse. Surrounded by neighbors, he turned the rifle on himself, dying instantly. Officials say illness may have affected his mind.
A fire destroyed the Bangor Daily News plant in Bangor Maine on January 28 lifting flames through an elevator shaft to the third and fourth floors. All editorial and composing staff had left. A printer and several other tenants were also burned out. Loss estimated at £35000. The News will be moved to a temporary plant tomorrow.
A fierce fire near New York Brooklyn yesterday engulfed the Hilly brothers fruit packing operation in Irving, with chemical plants nearby and a nitro glycerin factory across the street. Property losses exceed 75000, while the blaze remained confined to the fruit company’s building. Five minutes before detection, six to four workers reportedly left the site. cause unknown.
Officials of the Mexico Northwestern railroad reported that a train carrying American men and Mexicans left Juarez on Monday was seized by bandits led by Maxime Caetillier Guzman, about 85 miles south of the border in northern Mexico, creating a tense crisis for the railroad and its passengers.

Scharton cites lack of funds to pursue a Supreme Court appeal, calling it an unequal fight against a half‑million in favor of the opposing side. Bellows Falls June 28 funeral services were held for George H Babbitt a former paper manufacturer and Santa Claus figure at Westminster Terrace Immanuel Episcopal Church Rev A C Wilson officiated. The pallbearers included Frances G Flint Frederick J Carroll W Black John Clark Frank G Pieres and George Ri Wales. Body interred in Oak Hill cemetery tomb.
Clinton Scott of Tufts College has accepted a call to the rectorship of the Universalist church in Northfield. A Goddard Seminary graduate, Scott will begin duties next Friday after a recent trip through the state. He is described as a capable and engaging speaker.

A Vermon t meeting of the Macdonough association committee laid plans for a three day observance to honor Macdonough with religious services a parade pageant and public exercises. Governor Fletcher will be honorary president and state and national figures are invited for a statewide tribute including potential government funding and Navy presence at the basin below the falls.
Kerlington January 2 Harior Besson entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter in Chittenden County Court for the death of Alexander Cote. The plea, entered from not guilty, was accepted by the state, and Judge Stanton planned to sentence Penson this afternoon. Jurors have been excused for the term.
Fred Beene of Randolph, who alleged two Mackman dragged him to a resort in Winooski and forced him to walk home after robbing him, was jailed as a witness after filing the complaint. Deputy Sheriff Kent of Orange County took Beene to Handelph partly on a probation warrant. One man was arrested but later released on own recognizance. the other disappeared and has not been heard from.
Narlingtonu January 2 A meeting of the ice commission discussed appointing a special police woman. Mayor Burke supported the appointment, and after some deferral a 30 day term was approved with Commissioner LAN voting no. The mayor said the officer would target street youth and pool rooms, aiming to clean up minors if conditions prove workable.
St Johnsbury Jan 28 The funeral of Raymond Hunt of Newark was held this afternoon from Newark church. He met a fatal accident Saturday at Parke mill in Newark while loading grain. He crawled under the mill and was caught in the shafting dying at age 11. He leaves a wife and a one year old child.
Veteran temperance worker Rev W F Berry was found guilty of criminal libel by a Maine superior court jury after a four hour deliberation. The case stemmed from a Teepel article last fall accusing him, and trial covered one indictment plus separate statements. Jury out over four hours. court day cloudy and cold with light wind.
City finances show a slight asset loss with hand balance dropping from 16303.94 to 793.75. Twelve committee and departmental reports for 1913 were approved and ordered printed, with annual statements from water, poor overseer, and auditors to be read at a special council meeting later this week.
In Montpelier today Judge Nor modified an injunction against Enrico Modica allowing him to work in a Farre store while barring resuming any business. Petitioners Pasquale Indeserina and D'A Sabina bought Modica's business with a station. the order was adjusted so Mollica could work for the same body or another. Interment for Michael Sartorelli followed at Hope Cemetery with Granite Cutters delegation attending. Also notes ships permitted to go to New York piers after fog and delays near the harbor.

Spreadbury of 35 Railroad Street faced a statutory charge after an afternoon city court appearance. Chief Sinclair arrested him. State’s Attorney Carver led the prosecution with attorney Davie for the defense. Edith Hartley testified as the principal witness. Spreadbury and Hartley’s accounts diverged on alleged events at Spreadbury’s home. Hartley testified to past stay and fear of a neighbor, while Spreadbury contradicted her claims. John Leclair, believed 17, was arrested on a statutory charge. later ruled under 10, cannot be arraigned here and will be taken to Montpelier for proceedings before Judge Martin. Police reported two schoolgirls seen near the City hotel Tuesday noon.
