A fire and panic erupted in downtown Chicago when an explosion occurred in the Majestic hotel grill room kitchen early today. About 700 guests across two large hotels fled into the street in night attire as revolver shots rang out between Majestic and Great Northern hotels, with fire control achieved after efforts to contain the blaze.
Mrs Gertrude Rowe was sentenced to not less than a year and not more than three years after pleading guilty to running a house of questionable character. News reached St Albans yesterday of the death of A B Woodry of Somerville Massachusetts after a short illness. Woodry was a United States mail clerk operating between St Albans and Boston and formerly served Central Vermont as a through freight conductor from St Albans to Boston. He later worked as yard master at Barre and White River Junction before leaving 13 or 16 years ago to join government service. He was about years old.
Arthur Dennis, free on bail, faced a hearing in Burlington for a boycott case. The court discharged the charges due to lack of evidence and to avoid a broader ruling. Judge Moser Range noted disputes had been settled out of court, with subsequent arguments focusing on penalties for Samuel Gompers and others. In Rutland on January 28 an involuntary bankruptcy petition was filed against the Poultney Toy Works. Five Poultney concerns filed claims totaling 5100. The toy company has been in business less than a year according to the petitioners.
Washington reports that Owear Trombly and Lea Bohoner were arrested, tried, and found guilty for breaking quarantine rules. The town health officer warns that all steps will be taken to prosecute offenders. Mrs. Madora Clough left town for measures, and Black of West Herrin is mentioned in connection with a prior arrest as authorities enforce public health rules.
In Sault Ste. Marie Michigan the Helen iron mine at Gatario suffers a premature explosion killing three men and fatally injuring another. Officials say rescue crews recovered the bodies and transported the injured worker to a hospital for treatment. Investigators will determine cause and safety lapses.

The court granted Mrs Laure Schenk temporary release after a high profile poisoning trial interruption. Jol Schenk’s attorney filed for divorce proceedings to be detailed with the bill of particulars later. Prosecutor Handlan sought restrictions on Mrs Schenk from her husband’s home or contact with their children. Juror Isaac Hayman claimed he was removed from a state panel for voting against conviction, and some jurors discussed acquittal regardless of evidence while others supported the verdict. Mrs Schenk expressed sorrow at the events and noted a desire to see her children at home.

William Gould was held in jail on a serious charge in Rutland County Superior Court. He is accused of diverting a switchlight on the Rutland rail line near Clarendon on Christmas Day at about 2 a.m. The missing light was discovered the next day in a sleigh drawn by a borrowed horse. No accident occurred due to the wire’s displacement.
Jan 2 Rehel Paglos sues Gust Poulas in Burlington alleging adultery intolerable cruelty and failure to support. Petition seeks temporary and permanent alimony. Paglos claims property valued at 2400 dollars. Counter petition and attorney Bullard noted.
A Burlington report describes a June incident at a Criphoster resort where Sheri Allonagit chief of Pulloo Mussel led a patrol with Elward Horette and William Cote. Two young companions were present. A man Dalby and a boy Gardner were arrested. Nichole who ran the plies was not located.
Moses St. Peter of Montpelier fell about 20 feet into an ice channel on Prospect Street at dawn. He was rescued by officers and a night watchman after a rope attempt failed, treated for exposure and chest injuries, and sent to City Hospital. Judge Duncan assisted and St. Peter’s condition improved by morning. Earlier, Joseph H. Johnson of Montpelier pled guilty to a subsequent intoxication offense and was fined.
