State Auditor Gates testified that Gov. Graham admitted taking money to stave off bankruptcy. Gates said Graham told him Carroll S. Page pressed for payment during the Washington County Court session today.
Auditor Benjamin Gates testified in State versus Horace F. Graham that the governor promised to turn in his whole salary to cover an overdraft and keep him from bankruptcy. He recalled letters and meetings from April 1918 and May 4, 1919, showing Graham’s intent to fix the matter, while denying exact language. The testimony covered overdraft claims, payments, and disputes over the proper accounting processes as cross examination continued.
Paris reports repatriation of German prisoners of war progressing quickly after trains departed from Valenciennes Cambrai Toul Verdun and other points. Two ships at Le Havre will transport about 1 500 prisoners in days ahead and two more ships ready to move 30 officers and 700 men. Born November 4 1849 in Warren New Hampshire he farmed and ran Merrill Mountain Home near Mount Moosilauke before moving to Barre nine years ago He was twice married first to Mary Olin of Buskirk New York then to Minnie Chamere of Barre He is survived by two daughters from the first marriage a sister and a brother Funeral from the house Thursday at 2 o clock. The funeral of the late Willian H. Bradbury of Montpelier was held yesterday with a prayer service in Montpelier and burial at the Congregational church in Barre. Granite Lodge No 33 conducted masons burial rites with Rev F L Grad and Rev Mr Wipper officiating. Delegations from Barre, Montpelier, and the Bradford Grange attended the services.
A blaze at the Emmerson and Honesteatore furniture shop on Kil Street around 5 pm caused smoke and fear of loss. Firefighters quickly contained the flames but the building sustained significant damage and a possible charcoal smell lingered.
