An entry of no true bill was made in State vs Granai in city court yesterday. Cortana Granai pleaded guilty to keeping with intent to sell alcohol and was sentenced by Magistrate H. W. Scott to a maximum of eight months in Rathland house of correction with a minimum of six months. Police raided premises at 27 Granite Street Saturday night, recovering three barrels of beer and whiskey boxes. Granai was the keeper of liquor intended for disposal. his wife testified only in his presence. Dr Joe W. Jackson described Granai as suffering an incurable progressive disease, possibly limiting his life to weeks or months. The family is impoverished and the head of the household has not been able to work for years.
Serious results from coal gas asphyxiation were narrowly averted at the Tassie home on South Main Street. Mr and Mrs Tassie woke to a strong odor and fainting fits in adjoining rooms as Mrs Beversin and William Beversin were found unconscious. Arthur Stevens Martin a prominent Barre businessman died at his home 45 Park Street after a week long illness from grip and pneumonia. Born August 28 1860 in Northfield he moved to Barre at 16 and built a real estate and wand business. He served as a trustee of Goddard Seminary and was a director of Granite Savings Bank. Survived by his wife Cora E Mann and three children Newton 11 Constance 4 and Corinne 3, his mother Mrs Martha Perrin and sister Mrs Charles Parker and other relatives. Funeral at the Universalist church Friday at 1 o'clock with Rev. J B Reardon and Rev J W Barnett. interment Kimwood cemetery.
