Locomotive engineers on eastern railroads press demands for wage increases from fifteen to twenty-five percent. The claim covers all lines north of the Norfolk and Western boundary and east of the Ohio river to Chicago. Workers doubtful the timing favors gains, believing railroads will refuse.
Lawrence Mass June 26 strike of 20000 worsted and cotton mill workers shifts to a protracted struggle as peace talks collapse. Businessmen report disheartening mood and fear a month or more of stoppage while arbitration boards return to Boston to seek action.
A collision yesterday between the Hamburg-American liner Cleveland and the armored cruiser Colorado caused significant damage to the Colorado. Pilot Milton P. Sandor, in charge of the Cleveland, fell on the bridge, the steamer struck the Colorado from astern, jamming near Capt. William A. Gill’s cabin. The turret was torn, guns may need rearming, and propeller area damage is suspected. The Cleveland remained undamaged, and the Colorado was anchored in the harbor at the time.
Burlington police report 1,275 complaints in 1911, arrests at 21, but prosecutions and misdemeanors show relatively low crime. Drunkenness arrests dropped to 392 from 842. Arson remained steady at one arrest. Burglary fell from thirteen in 1910 to three in 1911. Roster shows two regular officers and salaries total 15,430.09. City budget for department is 18,000 with 2,155.03 paid for warrants issued.

Salem Va Jan 25 Attempts to oust a country teacher led to her murder. Eva Mers, the teacher, was shot near her school at Tackett store Roanoke county by Joshua Rimes, husband of the woman who led the ouster bid. Rimes fled and was moved to Pulaski as lynching fears grew. Charles Day was also wounded.
Sebago Me January police tracked a five man gang linked to an earlier raid at West Buxton. Alexander Roses borough a teamster was shot during a pursuit. one suspect Fred BR Dixon claims accidental discharge. The four others named Harry More mn Wales Tom Bi Oouner Morr id Oregon John T Ryan Ne H Fred BR Dixon Canada and George Sullivan New York were captured near Standiah Village and jailed in Portland after a search found valuables on them.
Tremors shook the Ionian Islands including Zanto Letkes and pephaloni causing property damage. Early reports indicate no fatalities though danger was widespread.
The old time bookmaker Louis Korn, destitute and ill, shot and killed himself in a cold city room. A coroner’s physician found emaciation from disease and starvation. His fall followed the end of horse racing laws that once fed his prosperity.
D P Higgins 53 of Blake & Higgins papermakers village dies at home after three months of ill health. He served as a library trustee and town official, leaving a wife, mother, sister and three children Charles Mary Catherine. Funeral planned for St Charles church Saturday morning.
In Graniteville at Miles Hall last night the joint installation of officers for A. O. H. Div 3 and the Ladies’ Auxiliary was held. Officers installed include Peter Murphy as President and Mia. Daniel Ryan as Auxiliary President, with multiple secretaries, treasurer, and committee chairs. Following the ceremony a social dance with Riley’s Orchestra entertained many attendees from Barre and Montpelier.
A devastating explosion triggered a fire that leveled the Acme Malting elevator in Chicago early today. Company officers could not state the cause or exact losses, but residents fear many workers were killed and no bodies have yet been recovered from the ruins. The blast’s range remains undetermined.
Woodstock January 25 The case of Staty versus Angelo Accomionia charged with the murder of Bernardino Mastrobrady at White River Junction is on trial in Windsor county court. State Attorney General Sargent and D A Bingree defend. About 22 jurors were examined. one could not be removed on principle against capital punishment. The trial opened yesterday morning with around 30 witnesses sworn. The proceedings likely extend into next week as evidence covers the premises and the fatal wound.
A Millinery store in the Walton block suffered a blaze started by faulty wiring shortly before 7 PM. Firemen used two water streams to quell flames that damaged the interior and awning, with smoke affecting adjacent shops. Insurance covers most losses, including $1000 with Granite Mutual and $500 with Vermont Mutual. Building damage estimated around $1,200. new floor and walls needed. A track driver slipped while helping at the hydrant but was uninjured.
J A Moster traveling salesman arrested Tuesday at Williamatta town Hiro by Deputy Slayton for shipping his board bill. He paid $4.40 to the Cabot inn landlord and was discharged. Warrant legality questioned. originally returnable in Hardwick before City Judge Ran Harvey. Foster pleaded not guilty. bail set at $100, later paid. Groton on June 25 saw Mr. and Mrs. S. D. Goodwin celebrated for their 50 years of marriage. Relatives and friends gathered at their home to share a bountiful repast as 75 guests attended. The couple, long residents of Westville, have two daughters Minnie and Mrs. Feed Pack er. Mrs. Goodwin, in frail health, has given time to needlework and has pieced fifty seven quilts. Attending out of town were several relatives and friends from nearby towns and counties.
Michael Brown died at his Elmwood Avenue home after a tuberculosis illness. His brother Joseph E. Brown died in Waterbury soon after. Survived by a widow and three children, Reagan Gertrude and Emily. two sisters Mrs. Martin Riley and Mrs. Margaret Ivor. brothers Detrick Brown and Dobo Brown. Born Leeds, lived in Barre area, longtime Singer and Wheeler & Wilson agent. Funeral at St Johnsbury with burial in St Johnsbury C O F.
St Allain Jr Charles Roger Lorday announced candidacy for appointment to the Vere mianit superior bench to fill the late judge A A Mall seat. Roywrie, a long-time board member, expects medical clearance soon and has strong local ties in Franklin and Grand districts.
Burlington officials appointed Mordwin and others to supervise vaccination of pupils at the Comverse school. The order targets students who have not recently been vaccinated, with about two children in the school yet unexamined. The city board of health aims to curb a small outbreak through compulsory inoculation.
Charles Londo of 21 Center Street and Miss Egidi Morandi of 4 Third Street married at the city clerk’s office at noon. Friends gathered to honor the couple as the ceremony completed. The executive council voted 7 to 1 to deny commutation for Silas N. Phelps, condemned for the murder of Deputy Sheriff Haskins. A Barre Vermont tale unfolds as a Newark North Dakota woman identified as Mrs Beare or Sears, a 22 year old hotel guest, attempted suicide after a failed romance with a hotel guest. She drank poison but survived and was confined for mental delay while authorities investigated.
