Stamford Conn Jan 22 nearly 60 occupants escaped as fire swept Betts academy early today leaving only foundations and area of ruin. Faculty students and servants fled with personal effects as flames consumed the structure. estimated damage near $100 000 with some quarters to be continued elsewhere.
Chelnes Jan 22 Lucas blacksmith shop on Corinth road, a town landmark, was damaged by fire yesterday as Lucas lit a fire and left for fuel. Fire caught, roof and end burned before containment. Village department led by Second Assistant Engineer F G Dearborn and Foreman C D Tracy with a bucket brigade and a fire extinguisher aided by F C Waldo. No insurance. shop long served as sole local source for oxen shoeing for miles.
A farmhouse near Warren, along with a barn, burned after a partner and his sons worked in nearby woods. Fire spread quickly but neighbors aided, and the blaze caused about 1300 dollars in damage, partially insured. No injuries reported.
New York January 22 a sensational shooting at Macy's department store restaurant ends in the death of Frank Beattie advertising manager of the Evening Telegram and leaves a woman, alleged to be May Roberts Clark, dying in hospital. The couple dined together when a yeoman drew a revolver firing five shots at Beattie and then killed herself. A revolver is found in her bag.

Rowton Jan 22 A Civil War veteran Marc Kil ler a New York Grand Army man roped from Harvard bridge into the Charles river today. He landed on a rock and broke both ankles while crawling toward deep water. He attempted suicide in the water and was taken to hospital.
William Wasne of Lowell is found dead behind a house where his wife lives after taking carbolic acid. Police believe he died after a suicide attempt while under liquor’s influence.
Verm Roberts of Salem was struck and killed yesterday afternoon on Belige street when a car wheels ran over the child. Eugene c of Mattapan was arrested. The apparatus failed to stop after the collision, and the child died en route to a hospital.

Windsor January 22. Deputy Sheriff Hookins aided by others arrested Fred Perry aged 14 for two burglaries in Brownsville. The burglaries occurred December 10 and Christmas week. Stolen items included small valuables and tobacco found in an attic above Stearns farm. Perry appeared before Justice Brewster and was bound over for Windsor court on a charge of burglary.

Alfred W Lane died late last night at his home in South Barre after injuries from a fall on November 24 led to complications. Surviving children include Dr George Lane, Mrs Emery Clark, W A Lane, Mrs Clayton Clark, Mrs E Ward, Grant A Lane, Earl Lane, and Adolph Lane, with brothers Edwin and Arthur and sister Mrs A X Bisachagh. Funeral set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. from the South Barre home. interment in Himwood cemetery.
