Jan 21 Middleton fire started in a bake shop from doughnut fat and burned three businesses. The blaze raged three hours, gutting the bake shop, a meat market, and a plant, with damages estimated at $14,000. Firemen stopped the flames after a prolonged effort.

St Johnaberg January 21 Sheriff Wiech and his team returned last night with two more alleged liquor law violators. They were arraigned on charges of illegal liquor possession and distribution in a raid that also led to prior detentions.

City health officer Dr M D Lamb filed the 1908 report showing 161 deaths, up from 150 in 1907, with 33 infant deaths under one year. Major causes included consumption, heart disease, pneumonia, and cholera infantum. 181 contagious disease cases with one death. Births fell from 281 in 1907 to 202 in 1908.
