A fire at the home of Allison J Hurlburt near Middlebury on January 20 destroyed the dwelling and a horse. Mrs Harpe, the housekeeper, discovered smoke in the upper floor around 1 pm and alerted neighbors by telephone. Firefighters lacked water, and most belongings were saved before the blaze, believed to have started from a defective chimney. the property was partially insured. Mr Hurlburt was away in the village at the time.

Longtime Barre Woman Mary Ann Gald Dies in Northfield Home
Mrs. Mary Ann Gald died at her home 74 North Main after a long illness. Born August 25, 1873, in Aberdeen Scotland, she was daughter of Adam Wood. She came to the United States with her parents, lived in Barre, married William Gankd in Northfield, and spent years in Northfield before returning to Barre. She is survived by daughter Mary Riney, her father Adam Wood, two sisters Elsie and Viola, and four brothers William, Charlewton. James, Springfield. Mason, Wilmington. Det. Funeral from her late home at 2 o’clock with Rev. B L Goodspeed officiating. The wake will be in Rumwood vault until spring when burial in Northfield. Flowers omitted.

Betty Jean Cutts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred K. Ontte, died at their Washington street home at 4:00 AM after a three week illness. The child, beloved in the neighborhood for her sweet nature, was cherished by her parents who stood by her bedside. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM from the Cutts residence.
