He urged a measured program to reform business without upheaval stressing railroads prosperity ties to national welfare and anticipated gradual changes with new leadership and spirit in industry.
June 20. Federal forces in northern Mexico are cut off from Mexico City. General Carmines, in contact with rebel commanders, reports no communication with the capital. Refugees are being cared for in the United States near San Blas, Sinaloa.
Washington reports gratitude in Monterey and vicinity for humane U S treatment of Mexican federal refugees from Ojinaga. Consul Hanna notes care is good and officials seek funds to cover detention and evacuation costs, with Mexico expected to reimburse. Unrest near Torrontes signals risk of Villa forces siege.
Mexican refugees numbering about 8 300 soldiers and 1 367 women and children arrived at Marfa Texas from the border after a four day march. They will be interned at Fort Bliss El Paso with officers and General Mercado among those confined behind a barbed wire fence. American cavalry led by Major McNamer escorted the group to the camp where bread ovens and US provisions eased their distress. The refugees praised the United States and cried Viva United States as they reached the American bivouac.
Paris report says Francis Du Pressenen, a member of the French Chamber of Deputies until last year, died recently after serving as ambassador in Washington. Details are unclear but the passing is announced from Paris.
Arthur Pavizo of Winooski regained freedom from Chittenden county jail after weeks for contempt of court over unpaid alimony. He agreed to an arrangement: $2100 owed, $1000 down, then $1 weekly until cleared, followed by the original $3 weekly until further notice. Also notes obituaries for Lavina Tillotson, 80, died at Stowe Mountain Road home. Rev. Lemuel Doyle officiated. burial at West Branch Cemetery. Karl Parkinson of Norwalk Connecticut, a Middlebury student, died at Practor hospital after a bout with typhoid fever. The 19 year old was son of Mr and Mrs Jolt Parkinson of Norwick and is survived by a brother and a sister and an aunt in Norwich. He was popular in class and participated in athletics and junior basketball.
A man named Antonia, claiming New Brunswick origin, was arrested at St Armand while trying to evade immigration officers and was brought to St Albans. He travelled from Boston to Montreal, said he had been in a fight at New Brunswick where he fired a revolver, and an interpreter assisted questioning. He awaits further word from New Brunswick.
James Duff a former Middlebury resident died in Houston Texas on Sunday at age 62. His body will be brought to Vermont for funeral rites. He lived in Middlebury for 22 years before moving to Texas about four years ago where he and his son farmed rust growing. Survived by sons James Duff Jr of Middlebury George Duff of Maine and Peter Duff of Colorado and daughter Miss Hilewe Thi of Salehe Rane. Funeral and interment in West Cemetery beside his wife who died here several years ago.
In St Albans a man named Him was arraigned before City Judge Punt and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to not more than two years or less than one year in a state prison. He was arrested at Sutton Thursday night for stealing about $90 from a barber shop owned by Louis Rothhard where he worked. Weather forecast notes snow likely tonight and Wednesday with heavy snow in New Hampshire and Vermont. colder in northern Vermont and Maine with brisk winds.
Chelsea January court session closes after Judge Butler and reporter leave Randolph. L Clifford of Randolph retracted not guilty plea and admits adultery, sentenced to one year to one year six months in Rutland house of correction. Other cases include divorce for Ernie B Slack vs Carleton Slack for intolerable severity and multiple respondents committed to prison or house of correction.
A Salt Lake City cadet was sentenced to three years for attempting to blackmail Dorothy Bamberger, a wealthy heiress. The scheme involved an infernal machine claimed able to kill from a distance via a wire attachment. Federal officers seized the device, proving it could execute the threat, and the court gave leniency, noting he acted under others’ influence.
New Haven announces Yale corporation meeting reports gifts and pledges totaling 350000 to expand the divinity school into a university religion center. Endowment to 1200000, the largest for a theological school in an American university. Donations include 100000 from Mrs J Willie James and Arthur Curtin of New Haven, 500000 from Mrs Stephen Mariel Clement of Buffalo, and an anonymous 190000 gift to fund a chair of social service.
A major blaze in Wollaville yesterday leveled the national aluminum works complex with damage estimated at 250000 dollars. The fire also destroyed the Take Hose company headquarters and part of the German Methodist church. About 196 workers inside the plant escaped with difficulty.
A senior woman about 70 years old fell from a chair in her home this morning, breaking her left hip. She was found resting comfortably last evening and is now recovering, with Fisher and others assisting at the scene.
In San Francisco on a cold January day the crew of a British vessel bound for Portland mutinied. Captain Henry Laciveer reportedly refused to discuss the trouble, while crew members claimed they would appeal to the British consul and seek permission to abandon or quit the ship.

Washington DC clerks broke up a House committee clash between Representative Johnson of Kentucky and John R Shields a local attorney. After blows were exchanged Johnson shouted Get my pistol I’ll shoot him. Shields was knocked down and Johnson fled to his room then returned to find only clerks remaining as the hearing on the police salaries bill continued.
In the New York Assembly last night three resolutions for general investigations were offered by Republican Leader Hinman, Progressive Leader Schaap, and Assemblyman Suber, with a fourth seeking to probe campaign contributions proposed by Assemblyman Murray. The Hinman plan targets the highway department and past Hughes era spending, calling for a joint committee of seven lawmakers to oversee the inquiry, with a $25 per diem.
Two fugitives identified as Howdan and Charles were recaptured after escaping through a hole in a terris. They were arrested at a track near Peshroad after being spotted by track walkers. Both men were not released and faced immediate custody following the recapture.
