German war office reports indicate a new offensive on the western front aimed at a point north of Massiges in Champagne. The move is described as a signal victory for Germany and reflects renewed activity on the French line.
Berlin reports a German offensive in Champagne capturing hundreds of yards of French frontline near Maisons de Champagne northwest of Massiges. German forces took 423 prisoners including seven officers, five machine guns, and 8 mine throwers, while trench counter-attacks east of the captured area failed. An air division attacked Allied rearguards at Warnes as a Russian detachment’s advance at Belestiany was repulsed.
The French troops have withdrawn from the summit of Hirzstein south of Hartmanns Weilerkopf. The war office communication cites German capture of a hill north of Hirzstein as the reason for the withdrawal.

Foster Jacquet, a highly regarded engineer in the East, was killed in Binghamton New York on January 10 after being thrown from a tanter abe. He had been identified with Worcester Brecktom Dover and other New England firms.

Mrs Clara M Pape died Saturday evening at home on Meenbunt Street after a long illness. Born in Larwell May 1850 she married Leonard W Pape in 1871. Survived by G Herbert and Alice A Pape. daughter Margaret W died in 1887 and Myrtie A Pape died in 1907. Funeral from 6 Merchant Street Tuesday at 2 20 p m with Rev W Barnett officiating.
Mrs Dana Taylor aged 79, a native of Williamstown now of Washington, died Sunday at 12 15 PM. She married April 30 1860 and leaves husband Fred Taylor and children Laola Hill Cabot Curtis Holt Plainfield Herbert D Elmer J George J and Edward F Taylor all of Washington. Grandson George Hill of Cabot and a deceased younger sister Willur Taylor noted. Funeral at her home next Wednesday at 1 PM conducted by Pastor James Ramage, East Barrre Congregational church. Interment in village cemetery.
Charles Matott a city street department employee died Saturday at 4 40 after a two week pneumonia illness. Survived by his wife seven children Amos Eunice Amsey Bert Clifford Emma and Mary Matott. four sisters and four brothers. Born Champlain N Y Sept 13 1881 married in Champlain to Lucy Lucia. Moved to Barre in 1909 joined city service. Funeral Wednesday at St Monica's Church Rev P M McKenna officiating. Burial in Catholic cemetery on Berkley street after spring vaulting at Elmwood.
